Sport Arena Vienna opens: A new home for top performance!
A lot is happening in the area of sports in Vienna. Today, City Councilor for Sports Peter Hacker, City Councilor for Finance Barbara Novak and NEOS club chairwoman Selma Arapović have the new one Sport Arena Vienna presented at the Handelskai. The opening event will take place tomorrow, September 6th, as part of a big sports festival for the whole family. This impressive building not only stands for sportiness, but is also seen as an environmentally friendly pioneer in the city - the arena is the first energy-neutral sports hall in Austria.
The multifunctional sports arena offers a total of 13,000 m² of sports space and is visited by around 150,000 visitors every year. Event highlights, such as the 100th anniversary of the Austrian Handball Association with an exciting international match against Hungary in November and another men's handball match against the Czech Republic on January 6, 2026, are already on the program. Basketball games by the Austrian national teams and the duel in the ABA League between BC Vienna and Red Star Belgrade will also take place here.
A sign for the future
The new sports arena is part of Vienna's extensive sports facility offensive, which is being pushed forward with an investment of around 400 million euros until 2030. Of this, 133 million euros will flow into the construction of the arena, which can accommodate up to 3,000 spectators. The usage capacity increases from the current 8,600 to an impressive 38,000 hours per year. A comprehensive energy concept is being implemented that includes photovoltaics, solar thermal energy and geothermal energy and relies on sustainable solutions.
Vienna is also sending clear signals for the further development of its sports infrastructure with the sports facility development plan “Sport.Wien.2030”. Vienna Holding Managing director Oliver Stribl emphasizes that the city will invest a total of 55 million euros in 29 sports facilities by 2026. This investment boost is intended to ensure that citizens of Vienna, young and old, have the opportunity to do sports.
Modern sports facilities for everyone
The focus is on creating modern, multifunctional sports facilities that are geared towards sustainability and environmental awareness. The comprehensive renovation programs, such as SPOSA I and II, also play a major role in ensuring a broad and affordable sports landscape for all Viennese. In this respect, the Sport Arena Vienna and the other planned developments have shown a good hand.
The city of Vienna impressively shows that sport is not only an important part of life, but also has a social function. With these initiatives and the opening of the Sport Arena, the sports city of Vienna will be further strengthened and optimally positioned for the future.
