New investigator duo in the Vienna crime scene: Fussenegger and Rupp take over

A new wind is blowing through the crime series landscape in Vienna: The popular “Tatort” has chosen two new investigators who are supposed to bring fresh impetus to the nightly case solving. From 2027, Laurence Rupp and Miriam Fussenegger will take on the main roles as half-siblings Charlie Hahn and Alex Maleky and solve tricky criminal cases. star reports that the two successors of the previous investigators, Adele Neuhauser and Harald Krassnitzer, are looking forward to their new challenge.

Neuhauer and Krassnitzer's farewell will last until the end of 2026, where they will appear in a total of three final episodes. These two provided exciting entertainment in around 40 “Tatort” episodes and won their way into the hearts of the viewers. “We are convinced that Laurence and Miriam are worthy successors,” said ORF director Roland Weißmann in a statement.

A fresh start with tried and tested flair

New cases are already being worked hard behind the scenes. Filming for the first episodes with the new protagonists is scheduled to start in spring 2026. Until then, the existing duo will continue to keep viewers on their toes. The new episode “The Electrician” will premiere on ORF 2 on December 14, 2025 and sets the course for future criminal cases. Interestingly, during their investigation there will be a particular focus on the relationship between the two siblings, which will certainly lead to exciting conflicts.

Both actors, Rupp and Fussenegger, have a long shared history that began in 2010 at the Max Reinhardt Seminar. Joint projects, such as the performance in “Midsummer Night's Dream”, also show that the chemistry between the two is right and is also valued privately. “It is a great honor for me to be part of this institution,” says Fussenegger, while Rupp expresses his humility and joy about the new role.

A look into the “crime scene” world

The “crime scene” itself looks back on a long history. The series started in West Germany in 1970 and over the years has developed into one of the oldest and most popular crime series in German-speaking countries. To date, over 1,300 episodes have been produced, with each episode offering a self-contained storyline with rotating investigators. Wikipedia describes that the series is a joint production between ARD, ORF and SRF and that regional peculiarities are cleverly integrated into the stories, which captivates the viewer again and again.

The “Tatort” episodes are known for their high quality and often deal with current socio-political issues. With the entry of Rupp and Fussenegger into the investigative team, the series relies on continuity and fresh impulses in order to maintain the high level. After numerous awards and recognitions in recent years, the series remains an important part of the German television landscape.

It will be interesting to see what twists the new investigators will bring to the mysterious stories surrounding the Vienna “crime scene”.
