Government damage in Vienna: Delays and train failures by June 8th!

Wieden, Österreich - Serious track damage between the train stations Vienna Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Quartier Belvedere has caused considerable restrictions on train traffic. As the Kurier were reported and primarily concerns the connections between Wiener Neustadt and Korneuburg. Travelers have to adapt to train failures and delays, which will probably take until June 8, 2025, 11:59 p.m.

The ÖBB has already reacted and deleted or redirected some train connections. Trains between Wiener Neustadt and Korneuburg/Deutsch Wagram are particularly affected. However, there is good news for affected passengers: the ÖBB ticket is also considered a ticket for the Viennese lines during the work, which should facilitate the switch to alternative means of transport.

effects on rail traffic

This disorder comes over a period in which rail traffic in Austria has strong growth. According to Statista there is already a significant part of the transport performance on rail transport. In 2022, around 218.7 million passengers were transported across the rail, which underlines the high priority of rail transport in Austria. Around 122,800 passengers pass the Vienna Central Station every day.

In 2021, passenger numbers were around 211 million in rail traffic and 42 million in long -distance transport, with ÖBB ran over a total of 192 international trains. In view of these figures, the disorder is all the more unfortunate, especially since ÖBB was able to have a punctuality of 81 percent in long -distance transport and 96 percent in local transport in 2022.

A look at the infrastructure

Austria is massively investing in the rail infrastructure, with great success. In a European comparison, the country is fourth in terms of investments in rail transport. By 2027, investments of around 3.26 billion euros are currently planned to expand and modernize the route length of around 5,600 kilometers. About 4,000 kilometers of them are electrified, which promotes the use of more environmentally friendly electrical locomotives.

In a time when the trains not only make a contribution to mobility, but are also increasingly perceived as an environmentally friendly alternative, it is important to quickly remedy such disorders. The hope is that the main route will be completely available again by Monday, June 8, so that traffic can be continued in the usual way.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how these track damage will affect the trust of passengers in the rail traffic in the long term. The ÖBB will do everything possible to remedy the restrictions as soon as possible and thus also ensure the satisfaction of travelers.

With such challenges, railway companies have to deal not only in Vienna, but also across the country. People are increasingly using the train as a means of transport of choice, and that should remain so, despite temporary hurdles.
