Historical hospital in Gersthof becomes a modern education campus!
Gersthof, Österreich - Last Wednesday, June 26, 2025, a new educational campus was opened in Vienna-Währing, which was created in the walls of the former orthopedic hospital in Gersthof. The listed location, which has been extensively renovated in the past six years, is not only a sign of the change in urban use, but also creates space for modern learning and education.
The history of the area is complex. The hospital, which was in operation until 2019, has a long tradition that dates back to the 1920s when it opened as a birth clinic. The decision to reuse was made in 2020 when the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG) was entrusted with the project order. An open competition for planning was obtained by the architecture firm Franz & Sue, which presented a well thought -out concept that takes into account modern educational requirements such as digitization, all -day operation and inclusion.
a modern learning location
In the new educational campus, a total of 23 regular classes can be accommodated, supplemented by specialist rooms and flexible learning zones. These learning landscapes are designed in such a way that in addition to traditional lessons, they also enable open forms of learning. The indoor and outdoor area offers supervised areas that create a positive learning environment to the students. A special highlight is the garden floor, from former basement and storage rooms, where workshops, a library and rooms for afternoon care are accommodated.
The planners placed special value on a harmonious integration into the existing historical substance. Despite the necessary redesign, the concise internal elements and the historical facade were preserved, while a newly designed staircase was significantly improved.
sustainability in focus
The educational campus also sets a strong accent for sustainability. The construction saves area, reduces the use of materials and lowers the operating and maintenance costs with the construction of a photovoltaic system and automated window splitting. It is noteworthy that the project meets the requirements of the Climate Aktiv Gold Standard, which represents a strong sign of an environmentally conscious way of dealing with resources.
In addition, a new gymnastics hall was built on the southern edge of the area, which can be used both as a large hall and as a multifunctional movement space. These measures contribute to the fact that the educational campus becomes not only a place of learning, but also of movement and creative development. The campus currently serves as an alternative quarters for the BG18 Klostergasse until the new premises can be used in full. The opening fell together with a school festival in which the new possibilities and the concept of the campus were celebrated.
In summary, it can be said that the educational campus in Gersthof is an excellent example of successful urban development. With a successful mix of historical preservation and modern learning designs, forward -looking learning is possible here. For more information on extraordinary educational projects in Vienna, take a look at the PPAG or Klimaaktiv.
