Innovative solar power plant in Vienna: A step towards a green future!

Something exciting is happening in the field of renewable energies in Vienna! The local energy supplier Wien Energie has launched an innovative project that is not only environmentally friendly but also creative. Today a photovoltaic roof with an output of 330 kWp was installed in the 11th district, Simmering. This roof, which offers protection for around 100 parking spaces, has even converted old wind turbine blades into recycling as supporting supports - a great example of circular economy, how ekovjesnik.hr reported.

The canopy will be equipped with state-of-the-art charging infrastructure for electric cars, including 24 wall charging stations and four fast charging points. With this step, Wien Energie impressively shows that the path to climate neutrality is not just on paper, but is actively and tangibly implemented.

A pioneer in the field of renewable energy

But that's just the tip of the iceberg! Wien Energie currently leads the market in Austria with over 480 photovoltaic systems. In 2024, the company also recorded record growth in wind energy and commissioned a new hydroelectric power plant to further boost the local energy future, as theinternational.at informs. The focus is clearly on doubling wind power capacity by 2026, which represents significant progress in the city's energy policy.

Wien Energie currently supplies around 770,000 households in the city with sustainable, green electricity. The company plans to continue investing in wind turbines by 2026 in order to increase installation capacities and thus further advance the energy transition. The total expenditure for the necessary infrastructure is to be increased to an impressive one billion euros by 2029.

The numbers speak for themselves

Renewable energies not only affect domestic production, but also affect overall consumption. Data shows that the share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption was already 22.4% in 2024, an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to the previous year. The target for 2030 is 41%, an ambitious project that is spurred on by current developments in every respect, as the Federal Environment Agency reports.

The energy transition in Vienna is becoming more and more tangible - and the future looks bright green! Wien Energie not only invests in wind and water, but also in innovative solutions such as photovoltaic roofing, bringing a breath of fresh air to the local climate protection strategy.
