FH Campus Vienna becomes a University of Applied Sciences!

July 14, 2025 was an important day for the University of Applied Sciences (FH) Vienna Campus. The institution has changed its name and now officially bears the title “University of Applied Sciences Vienna Campus”. This renaming was made possible by an amendment to the University of Applied Sciences Act, which came into force in July 2024. This enables the universities of applied sciences to present themselves as universities of applied sciences. Loud MyDistrict.at The change aims to improve the international comparability of qualifications for students.

“The renaming is more than just a new name,” explains Wilhelm Behensky, founder and chairman of the university. “It reflects our development and underlines our goal of increasing the institution’s international visibility.” With the new title, the university is focusing on application-oriented research, which is now bundled in ten subject-specific research centers. In addition, the university will be easily accessible via its new website “www.hcw.ac.at”, where it can present its approximately 70 study programs, which are tailored to around 8,500 students at two locations and two cooperation locations, as well OTS.at reported.

New focus and goals of the university

Over the course of its 20-year history, the University of Applied Sciences Vienna Campus has always focused on application-oriented studies and research. The wide range of study programs ranges from applied nursing science and health sciences to technology and business. This strengthens the university's position within Austria, where universities of applied sciences play an important role in the educational landscape.

Another future-oriented step is the renaming of its subsidiaries. In the future, FH Campus Wien Forschungs- und Entwicklung GmbH will operate as Hochschule Campus Wien Forschungs- und Entwicklung GmbH, while the existing Restaurant Betriebs GmbH will use the name “Hochschule Campus” in its name. This is part of the strategy to increase the visibility and influence of the entire institution.

Promoting research at universities of applied sciences

A significant aspect of the new name is the emphasis on applied research. This is not only promoted within the university itself, but also supported by national programs. As part of the program to promote application-oriented research at universities of applied sciences, which was decided by the Joint Science Conference (GWK) in 2023, the federal and state governments are to provide up to 500 million euros in project funds by 2030. The aim is to further develop the research capacity of universities and to ensure the transfer between science and society. This will be driven forward by adapted research strategies and the expansion of collaborations, informs the GWK.

The University of Applied Sciences Vienna Campus is therefore well positioned to have an even stronger presence in the scientific landscape with its new name and focus on application-oriented research and to create attractive offers for students and graduates. The development will help the university to network better internationally and make optimal use of its resources.
