Vienna cycle path offensive: Outer Mariahilfer Straße shines again!

in Vienna is a lot going on in the outer Mariahilfer Straße: The first section between Clementineningen and the belt has now been completed. With a total length of 640 meters, this conversion is an essential part of the city's extensive cycle path offensive. Not only the new structurally separate two -way cycle path delights cyclists: inside, also the green areas and wider sidewalks with seating options bring significantly more quality of life into the district. According to meinzirk.at, a total of 18 new trees were planted and the green area was expanded by impressive 830 square meters.

Another highlight of the redesign is the Palmgasse, which is now permeable to cycling traffic. Here, cozy seating areas and refreshing water features invite you to linger. Thanks to the level setting between the road and the sidewalk, the cross for pedestrians becomes children's play inside. The trams also keep their track body, while the road is operated out of the city as a one -way. The entire concept was largely shaped by the wishes and ideas of the citizens: inside that had more green, common rooms and better bicycle infrastructure.

a win for everyone

The Viennese mayor, Sima speaks of great advances in the cycle path situation of the city. Around 20 kilometers of new cycle paths are being built every year to meet the increasing number of cyclists: on the inside. In 2023, a new record was reported with almost 12 million cyclists. The cycling share is now 11 percent and has therefore clearly gained importance.

The total redesign of the 1.9 kilometer -long outer outer Mariahilfer Straße continues with the planned second section from Clementineningen to the Anschützgasse in autumn. There are 45 new trees and 1,300 square meters of additional green areas on the program. A new 750 meter long, wide bike path will also ensure even more security and comfort. The project is supplemented by fog steles, drinking hydrants and two new water features that ensure cooling in the cityscape.

part of the cycle path offensive

This conversion is not just a local showcase project, but part of the comprehensive Viennese cycle path offensive, which has initiated over 250 projects since 2020. The city invested a total of around 130 million euros in improving cycling infrastructure. Other examples of this include Praterstrasse, Wagramer Straße and Donaustadtstrasse, where new bike paths and numerous trees have also been planted. Here, too, the goal of the city shows: a balanced solution for all citizens: inside, which is supposed to create more space in public space, an improvement in the quality of life and above all a green, cooling environment.

With the measures to redesign the outer Mariahilfer Straße and other projects, Vienna continuously works to become climate -neutral by 2040 and to make it even more pleasant to move in city life. The idea is clear: less asphalt, more green - a real win for everyone!
