The new emergency accommodation Haus Espera inspires in Rudolfsheim!
In Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, Caritas has set an important example for people in need with the new emergency shelter “Haus Espera”. After five years of planning and renovation, the facility, previously known as “Haus Amadou,” was extensively renovated and now shines in new splendor. The grand opening marks a milestone for local support for homeless people, especially those without access to social assistance and health insurance. My district reports on the significant changes made since closure during renovations in April 2024.
House Espera can accommodate 136 people, including single women, men and families with children. What is particularly noteworthy is the inclusive nature of the facility: 49 residents have a refugee background. The emergency accommodation is barrier-free and equipped with modern heating technologies such as underfloor heating and district heating. A “climate oasis” on the ground floor also ensures pleasant temperatures during the hot months. Planning for the renewal began in 2020 and was partly supported by the EU funding program “NextGenerationEU”. Caritas Vienna informed.
Diverse support for people in need
In “Haus Espera” residents can expect a comprehensive range of services. In addition to the supply of essential goods, the facility also provides psychological support and legal advice, particularly important for the target group of excluded homeless people. Loud Caritas Vienna Not only are basic needs taken into account, but integration measures are also offered, such as German courses and help in finding work and housing.
A particular focus is on promoting independence and developing realistic perspectives. Ultimately, the residents should not only find a roof over their heads, but also receive support on the way to an independent life. The commitment of the population plays an important role here, whether through donations of money or goods or through participation in special cooking events as part of the “Social Team Days”.
Integration and future prospects
The importance of integrating refugees is becoming increasingly clear in a broader social context. How UN refugee aid describes, early integration into daily life is crucial for successful integration. Because many refugees are unable to return to their homeland due to ongoing conflicts or persecution. The process of integration is complex and requires adaptability from both sides - both the newcomers and the host societies. In “Haus Espera” exactly this path is paved to obtain permanent residency or even citizenship.
Overall, “Haus Espera” is a valuable contact point for people in need. It is a place of hope, support and community - and therefore an essential part of Vienna's social infrastructure.
