Vienna Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus: Electric cars dominate with 58% of new registrations!
The switch to electromobility is making real progress in Austria. As a current report from W24 shows, there are now, for the first time, districts in which the proportion of electric cars in new registrations exceeds the 50 percent mark. The district of Vienna-Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus is particularly at the forefront with a remarkable share of 58 percent of new cars, followed by Vienna-Mariahilf, where 56 percent of new cars are also electric. These figures come from the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ) and are based on current data from Statistics Austria.
If you look at the shares of electric cars, it is exciting to see that Linz is at the top of the state capitals with 29 percent, while Burgenland and Styria currently have the lowest values. The VCÖ analyzes that the CO2 emissions of electric vehicles are 53 percent lower than conventional diesel cars, which means that the switch not only makes ecological sense, but is also a question of sustainability.
The situation in the districts
The distribution of electric cars is also evident in the districts outside Vienna. The Rohrbach district in the Mühlviertel has one of the highest rates, with almost 35 percent of electric cars. This is accompanied by Kirchdorf (31 percent) and Graz surroundings (30 percent). In contrast, there are only two districts - Liezen and Reutte - which lag significantly behind with less than 10 percent share of electric cars.

- Graz-Umgebung: 30%
- Bezirke mit unter 10% E-Pkw-Anteil:

- Reutte: ca. 6%
Another interesting detail: of the newly registered diesel cars, around 80 percent were owned by companies or legal entities. Experts are therefore calling for an end to tax incentives for diesel and privately used company cars in order to further strengthen the trend towards electromobility. This increases the pressure to tighten incentives for electric cars.
The look into the future
The number of electric vehicles in Austria is constantly increasing. There are currently around 244,000 electric vehicles, including hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, registered in Austria. Electric cars are particularly popular, with around 155,500 of them already on the road in 2023. New registrations have also developed positively: Over 71,000 new electric vehicles were registered in 2023, a big increase compared to 2022 with 53,900 new registrations.
Charging infrastructure and energy requirements also play a crucial role in the nationwide expansion of electromobility. The number of available e-charging stations in Austria is currently around 18,600, with most of them being in Lower Austria. Vienna provides the second largest number with around 2,500 charging stations. Experts point out that the additional electricity requirement for electromobility in Austria will be around 20 terawatt hours per year.
Overall, Austria appears to be well positioned on the path to electromobility. A look at the developments gives hope for a greener future in which switching to electric vehicles becomes the norm. The W24 report highlights that Vienna-Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus is a pioneer here and impressively demonstrates the potential of electromobility.
