Korneuburg loses dramatically in the basement duel: now last in the league!
The handball world in Vienna was marked by an exciting basement duel on December 2nd, 2025. Union Sparkasse Korneuburg had to admit defeat to WAT Fünfhaus with 26:30 and thus slipped to last place in the table. Both teams played a quality and balanced game in the first few minutes, which ended 14:14 at halftime. The game was not only characterized by fighting spirit, but also had its downsides.
A thrilling basement duel
The outcome of the encounter was of great importance for both teams as they did not want to lose touch in the HLA Challenge. WAT Fünfhaus, previously last in the league, was able to score five goals in the decisive final quarter of an hour and thus secure victory. Captain Lenny Fetz once again proved his class and was the best player of the game with five goals in the second half. Korneuburg was once again in the lead, but Fetz's decisive goals catapulted his team to victory.
Both teams now have six points each, which further complicates the situation in the HLA Challenge. Fünfhaus will play its next home game against Madx WAT Atzgersdorf on December 6, 2025, while Korneuburg remains at the bottom of the table and urgently needs points.
Bad luck with injuries and morale
Unfortunately, a serious injury overshadowed the game: backcourt player Valentin Klicha had to be transported to the hospital shortly before the end, which affected the team's morale. Despite the win, assistant coach Timo Issing was affected by the injury and praised the morale of his team. “We have to be strong now and hope that Valentin gets back on his feet quickly,” said Issing. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award symbolically went to Klicha for his tireless efforts.
Such injuries are not uncommon in handball. A study by the Ruhr University Bochum makes it clear that ankle injuries in particular occur frequently and can sometimes have long-term consequences. The sport is characterized by high intensity, which unfortunately increases the risk of acute injuries. Prevention measures such as targeted muscle training and appropriate warm-up phases are therefore essential to offer players the best possible safety.
In the coming weeks it will be crucial for Korneuburg to stay injury-free and fight their way out of the table trouble. While Fünfhaus is optimistic about the next game with new victories behind it, Korneuburg faces a crucial challenge in order to avoid falling further into relegation.
