E-car on the advance: Vienna with over 50% innovations!

A lot is happening in the Austrian automotive industry: In the first half of 2025, 31,534 new battery -electric cars were approved in Austria, which corresponds to a clear sign of the growing popularity of electric vehicles. The total share of e-cars in Austria is now 22%. This is an impressive increase in a whopping 42% compared to the first half of 2024, and shows that electromobility is still on the rise. Especially in the federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria, the proportion of e-cars is over 25%, while Styria forms the bottom of only 17%. Elektro.at also reports that the e-car shares are over 20% in all state capitals.

What is the reason for this trend? On the one hand, it is due to the improved environmental balance of electric cars. According to the Federal Environment Agency, CO2 emissions for e-cars are 53% lower than in conventional burners. In addition, electric cars consume three times less energy per kilometer than their petrol or diesel-powered counterparts. This not only leads to a reduction in the environmental impact, but also to lower operating costs, which many continue to serve as a purchase argument.

The pioneers in the districts

The fact that there are now two districts with over 50% e-car share in Austria for the first time. In Vienna Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, this proportion is 58%, while Vienna Mariahilf follows 56%. Linz also fought for first place in the state capitals with almost 29%, followed by Salzburg and Eisenstadt.

  • Top districts with e-car share over 50%:
    • Wien Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus: 58%
    • Wien-Mariahilf: 56%
  • Other remarkable districts:
    • Vienna Inner City: 46%
    • Wien Leopoldstadt: 45%
    • Rohrbach district: Almost 35%
  • final light:
    • Liezen district: around 4%
    • Reutte district: around 6%

The VCÖ calls for clear EU requirements for manufacturers to promote the production of smaller and more economical models. This requirement becomes all the more urgent, since not only the climate crisis is further intensified, but also the average CO2 emissions of new diesel cars has increased to almost 153 g/km.

Criticism of tax benefits

Another debate is in the room: the VCÖ criticizes the tax benefits for company cars with internal combustion engines. In times when climate protection plays an ever greater role, it is questioned whether such incentives are still up to date. Interestingly, 80% of diesel cars were approved on companies or legal entities, which makes this topic even more important.

In view of these developments, it is clear that electromobility in Austria is well on the way to establishing itself. The demand and acceptance of electric cars are increasing steadily, and this is not only evident in the number of admission, but also in the constantly growing charging infrastructure and production capacities. It is only to be hoped that the political framework will support this trend and that the necessary changes can be implemented as quickly as possible. vCOE.AT and Statista demonstrate this positive development impressive.
