Caritas starts climate oases: Help for heating people in Vienna!
The sun burns relentlessly on the city, and not only for the holidaymakers who enjoy the summer heat, but especially for people in need. On June 25th, Caritas opened its sixth edition of the climate oases in Vienna to offer urgently needed support during the heat waves. In collaboration with 23 parishes in Vienna and Lower Austria, these oases become an important retreat for homeless and poverty -affected and elderly people.
With a high demand for help in the hot months, Caritas is well positioned: over 500 volunteers are ready to offer cool drinks and snacks in these oases. Last year there were more than 9,000 visits to the climate oases, and the number is likely to increase this season. Streetwork teams also become active by distributing water, sunscreen and headgear to prevent heat damage and dehydration. Ismats and summer sleeping bags are also spent on those affected to offer them a little comfort.
medical help and call to support
A particularly important offer is the "Louisebus" medicine bus, which provides free medical help five days a week. In view of the alarming studies on the abrasion through extreme heat, which affect vulnerable groups, the work of Caritas is indispensable. Professor Fellner warns that hot days will probably occur more frequently and more intensively in the future, which endangers public health considerably. Studies show that heat waves also heavily burden women and people with previous illnesses.
In order to maintain this valuable aid campaign, Caritas asks for help and donations. A cold drink only costs 3.50 euros, while a heat package that contains essential things such as is mat, summer sleeping bag and sunscreen costs 50 euros. Interested parties can transfer donations directly to the Caritas account:
