16 days against violence: Rudolfsheim sends a strong signal!

We are constantly faced with the pressing question of why violence against women occurs so frequently. In Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, this problem was addressed on the occasion of the international campaign “16 days against violence against women”. Every year from November 25th to December 10th, worldwide attention is drawn to this issue. A strong signal was recently sent in Auer-Welsbach-Park. There is now an orange bench here that indicates the 24-hour emergency number for women: 01 71 71 9.

The district leadership wants to use such actions to raise awareness and shed light on the dramatic situation. In Austria, a woman is murdered every three weeks, often by her partner. This year, 17 women have already lost their lives due to domestic or partner violence. These frightening figures come from the current survey on violence against women, which also show that there is a large discrepancy between the genders: women experience violence disproportionately often because of their gender.

Political support

Numerous political representatives were present at the action, including Dietmar Zach from the Left/KPÖ, Bernhard Bergler (SPÖ), Catherina Schneider (Greens), Manfred Dvorak (FPÖ), Martina Nekula (ÖVP) and Andreas Leszkovsky (Neos). Their commitment shows that the issue concerns everyone and that a joint effort is required to effectively combat violence against women.

Raising awareness is urgently needed. One in three women over the age of 15 have experienced violence in their lives, be it in relationships, at work or even in childhood. These facts come from the “Gender-based violence against women and other forms of interpersonal violence” survey by Eurostat and the Federal Chancellery. Statistics Austria reports that comprehensive data collection is planned to counteract this violence.

Support offers

In Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus there are various offers that support women in need. In addition to the regularly available 24-hour emergency call, test bracelets are also available that are intended to protect against knockout drops. These can be picked up at the district office from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Thursday until 5:30 p.m.

Additionally there is the 0800/222 555 helpline, which is also available around the clock. In acute situations, those affected can contact the police emergency number on 133 or 112. Deaf and hard of hearing people can contact via SMS 0800/133 133 Get help.

It is essential that we as a society take a closer look and give the women affected the support that they so urgently need. The constant presence of issues relating to violence against women is a step in the right direction and will hopefully soon lead to an improvement in the situation.
