Railjet upgrade: More comfort for Lienz-Vienna from October 6, 2025!

The anticipation of an improved travel option between Lienz and Vienna is increasing: from October 6, 2025, the ÖBB will switch to the comfortable Railjet trains for the two direct connections. Not only should ticket buyers in East Tyrol get a good deal for themselves, but all travelers should also benefit from high-quality equipment and a significantly improved travel experience. Loud Press ÖBB the new travel times start as follows:

  • Wien Hbf – Lienz: 08:24–14:06 Uhr und 14:24–20:06 Uhr
  • Lienz – Wien Hbf: 07:53–13:36 Uhr und 15:53–21:36 Uhr

The switch to Railjet trains not only means an upgrade in passenger comfort, but also helps save travel time. From December 14, 2025, it is also planned to have one of these Railjet connections operated with a completely modernized RJ set. This is in view of the upcoming opening of the Koralmbahn, which will reduce the travel time between Lienz and Vienna by a remarkable 23 minutes - to around 5 hours and 19 minutes.

Modernization of the Railjets

In addition, ÖBB has launched an ambitious program to modernize the entire existing Railjet fleet by the end of 2031. After more than 15 years of use, the sets have almost reached their planned service life. The aim of this modernization is to achieve the quality standard of the new Railjet generation. The first upgraded set will go into operation on the southern route as early as December 2025, which is interesting news for travelers in Austria, especially since trains to Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Italy will also be used.

The upgrade measures aim to take the travel experience to a new level. Improvements include:

  • Neue, bequemere Sitze in der ersten und zweiten Klasse sowie in der Business Class
  • Zusätzliche USB-Lademöglichkeiten
  • Modernes Innenraumdesign in attraktiver Holzoptik
  • Optimierung der Ausstattung mit größeren Klapptischen, Fußstützen und Haltegriffen
  • Ein neues Fahrgastinformationssystem und optimierte Kinderwagenabstellplätze
  • Einbau von Verpflegungsautomaten für Heiß- und Kaltgetränke sowie Snacks

Another positive development is that Lienz will now be connected to local transport every hour during the day with 15 connections to Spittal-Millstättersee and Villach, which will significantly improve the region's accessibility. ORF Tyrol reports on the good progress that ÖBB is making in modernization.

The modernizations are not only more available for passengers, but also for the train staff themselves. Employees benefit from additional compartments and better equipment. This means that every train becomes more than just a journey, but an experience – in line with the wishes and needs of modern travelers. A look at the Reporting by Lok Report suggests that ÖBB will continue to demonstrate its good knack for quality.
