Union Berlin wins 2-0 in Linz and makes Boateng look old!
In Linz, 1. FC Union Berlin won its third test match with a clear 2-0 against the local LASK today, July 19, 2025. Under summer conditions of 28 degrees and in front of 6,442 spectators, including around 1,000 Union supporters, the team led by coach Steffen Baumgart showed a solid performance that should make the coaching team satisfied.
The match in the Raiffeisen Arena brought Union's first goal with Lucas Tousart in stoppage time in the first half. In the 63rd minute, Ilyas Ansah, a newcomer from Paderborn, stepped up and made the decision. Berlin's defense was stable and gave LASK only a few chances, while new goalkeeper Matheo Raab, who was making his debut, was not really challenged.
Performance record and bad luck with injuries
But not everything went perfectly: Marin Ljubicic – a well-known name from his time at LASK – missed two big opportunities that could have made the game even clearer. The offensive actions also showed room for improvement, especially in terms of precision and timing. An unplanned substitution happened to David Preu, who had to go through an injury before the break (shoulder check).
Coach Steffen Baumgart left most of his players on the pitch for 45 minutes, which underlines their physical robustness and aggressiveness in set-piece situations. “We did what we set out to do,” said Baumgart, who was overall satisfied with the performance.
Next stop: Rapid Vienna
The next test match is already around the corner: On Sunday, July 20, 2025, the Berliners will meet Rapid Vienna at the Allianz Stadium. For Union, a further step in preparation for the upcoming 2025/26 Bundesliga season, which starts on August 22, 2025. Coach Baumgart will continue to test his protégés in the coming days.
Outside of the test matches, Union has also planned an intensive training camp in Herzogenaurach under the leadership of Baumgart, which lasts from July 23rd to August 2nd. In addition to the game against Rapid Vienna, the summer schedule also includes other games, such as the clash with Greuther Fürth and Espanyol Barcelona, with the first DFB Cup game taking place between August 15th and 18th.
The omens are good for Union: With a mix of new talents like Ansah and experienced players, the team will do everything in its power to be well prepared for the coming season, although the offensive department still needs to work on fine-tuning.
Berlin courier reports that Union is laying the foundations for a promising season, while Stern emphasizes that these test matches can bring the team decisively forward. The MOZ provides information on the other summer dates: Click here for the details.
