Scientists take on lies: Discussion evening in Vienna!
On June 16, 2025, at 7 p.m., the Neubau District Museum and “Zwischenwelt international” invite you to the exciting event “The New Power of Lies”. This is all about the topic “Science against disinformation”, because the spread of false information is a central problem today that cannot be ignored in society. The event takes place at Stiftgasse 8 in the 7th district and not only offers free entry, but also an invitation to a glass of wine afterwards.
The speakers will be experts such as the Eastern European historian Franziska Davies, the philosopher Constantine Emperor, the political scientist Martin Malek and the author Oksana Stavrou have their say with their insights. The event will be moderated by Sonja Pleßl, who is celebrating her birthday on this day and is asking for donations for a rehabilitation center in Ukraine. Ms. Stavrou plans to personally bring the collected donations to Ukraine in July.
Disinformation in the age of conflict
The big question about disinformation, which is not only addressed by the event, primarily concerns the current war in Ukraine. According to a comprehensive analysis by EDGE Russia has spread massive amounts of misinformation targeting numerous audiences, including Ukrainians and Western nations. These practices not only involve increased propaganda, but also the strategic use of social media and fake websites to specifically manipulate information and exert influence.
A study by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) shows that information warfare has greatly intensified since the Russian invasion in February 2022. Although state media has lost influence in the West, it is still active in other regions, such as the Middle East and Latin America. The propagandists have developed a feeling for how they can exploit human fears, for example about migration or economic decline, for their own purposes in order to advance a certain agenda. The ISD warns of the long-term effects of these measures on the liberal world order and emphasizes the need for vigilant action within Western societies.
Shared responsibility and commitment
The event in the Neubau District Museum is not only a discussion about science, but also a call to support Ukraine in the fight against disinformation. The funds raised through the celebrations and the event are intended to do concrete good. In times when the spread of misinformation via social networks and other channels is reaching worrying levels, the exchange of knowledge and information is more important than ever.
