Milan dominates Lecce: 3-0 thanks to an early red card!
Last night, AC Milan celebrated an impressive win against US Lecce in the second round of the Coppa Italia, catapulting themselves into the round of 16 with a 3-0 win. But the path to success was paved by the early red card for Lecce player Jamil Siebert in the 18th minute, which was pronounced after a VAR review, as Laola1 reports.
Santiago Gimenez laid the foundation for the victory just two minutes later when he made it 1-0 in the 20th minute after a fine assist from Davide Bartesaghi. Milan dominated the game from the start and showed that they were willing to advance to the next round of the event. Christopher Nkunku, who hit the post in the 9th minute, and Adrien Rabiot, who hit the crossbar in the 30th minute, set the tone early on.
One-sided affair
Lecce couldn't really pose a threat in the first half and didn't have any significant offensive action until half time. After the break, Milan remained superior. Ruben Loftus-Cheek hit another shot off the post in the 47th minute, showing that the Rossoneri's pressure continued unabated. Nkunku finally made it 2-0 in the 51st minute with a pass from Alexis Saelemaekers.
In the 64th minute, Christian Pulisic topped it off by scoring Milan's third goal after a pass from Youssouf Fofana. Lecce only had one chance to score in the 71st minute through Medon Berisha, whose free kick was strongly parried by Milan keeper Mike Maignan. This paved the way for coach Stefano Pioli's team to the round of 16.
Coppa's story
AC Milan's successes in the Coppa Italia should not be underestimated. The club has won the tournament a total of five times, with the last title coming in the 2002-03 season. The team was particularly strong back then and prevailed against well-known opponents in the last years of the last millennium. They won their first two titles in 1966-67 and 1971-72, while they also defended the trophy in 1972-73 and 1976-77 against strong rivals such as Juventus and Inter. They are currently the fifth most successful team in Coppa Italia history, with Juventus, Roma and Inter each having more success, as FootItalia summarizes.
So it remains to be seen how far AC Milan will make it in the Coppa Italia this year. The positive performance against Lecce is certainly a good step in the right direction. Maybe with these conditions the team will make a name for itself again and get closer to the long-awaited return to Coppa Italia honor. In any case, fans can look forward to exciting games!
