Knife attack in Vienna-Meidling: 20-year-old seriously injured!

On July 18, 2025, a frightening incident took place in the park in Meidling in which a 20-year-old man was seriously injured. That incident, which began around 6:30 p.m., ended in a scuffle between the victim and another group of young men. According to information from 5min.at, there was initially a verbal argument, which then escalated. An unknown perpetrator stabbed the victim with a knife.

The victim was accompanied by two friends who were also present at the time of the incident. The police were only alerted when the incident had already occurred some time ago, which complicated the investigation. The injured man received emergency medical care from the Vienna professional rescue service and was then taken to hospital.

Investigations and searches

The investigation was taken over by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, South Branch. However, an immediate search in the local area was unsuccessful. In another incident in Vienna-Meidling, a 38-year-old was injured with a sharp object after an argument with an unknown man. A 25-year-old acquaintance of the victim witnessed the incident, but the perpetrator was able to escape, which further complicated the situation, as Kurier reported.

The increasing number of knife attacks in Austria casts a dark light on the current security situation. There has been an almost 25 percent increase in knife attacks since 2020. According to Austria Aktuell, there were a total of 2,596 knife offenses in 2022, with Vienna leading the way with 956 attacks. This corresponds to almost three attacks per day.

Security situation in Vienna

What is particularly alarming is that of the 2,471 suspects, 1,386 (approx. 56%) were not Austrian citizens. Most of them came from countries such as Morocco, Turkey and Syria. The situation not only causes concern among the population, but also calls for political action. FPÖ General Michael Schnedlitz criticized the Interior Minister and called him a “security risk”. The urgency of taking measures to improve security is being called for from various quarters.

In this tense situation, it is of utmost importance that the security authorities successfully combat the growing threat of violence. The incident in Meidling is just another tragic example in a series of knife attacks that are affecting people's everyday lives in this country.
