Meidling: Train station chaos! Neos demand radical transformation now!

The waves are hitting high at Meidlinger Bahnhof, one of the busiest transport hubs in Vienna. Around 80,000 people use the station every day, which acts as a central interface for ÖBB long-distance transport, regional trains and the Badner Bahn. Despite this high frequency, the station is often described as uninviting - chaotic traffic structures and crime all around cast a shadow over its use. Christian Volkmann, club boss of Neos Meidling, emphasizes that no one feels invited to linger. “There is something there,” he says, calling for a fundamental redesign of the environment to make it safer and more welcoming for all users.

What is particularly explosive is that three years ago at least 1.5 million euros were invested in the modernization of waiting areas and the station hall. But the Neos see this commitment as insufficient and are presenting their own concept for upgrading the area. Comprehensive measures are planned, including reducing Eichenstrasse from four to two lanes, as well as creating safe, structurally separated cycle paths and wider sidewalks. Volkmann and his team want to set up a bike garage and unravel and redesign the intersections around the train station. The bus routes will also be merged to ensure greater efficiency.

The future of Meidlinger Bahnhof

An executive security center is to be built on the Meidlinger Barracks area in the coming years - a step that could increase the safety and well-being of passers-by. The Neos present their concept as an alternative to the planned “Meidline”, a costly pedestrian bridge that would cost 35 million euros. In addition, a police inspection at the train station is required to ensure greater security. The Chamber of Commerce expresses its concerns and calls for a spacious tunnel exit from the train station to Meidlinger Hauptstrasse in order not to endanger commercial traffic.

Another concern of the Neos is the creation of an underground connection to the “Arcade Meidling”. This means that even a nearby supermarket could benefit from Sunday opening. A motion for a resolution to open on Sundays was rejected in March, but the issue remains in public discourse.
