Kühnsdorf rejoices: From March, the WESTbahn will bring new opportunities!

From March 2026, Kühnsdorf train station will be a new WESTbahn stop, and that means good news for the Southern Carinthia region. The train will stop here ten times a day, in both directions. WK President Jürgen Mandl emphasizes that this stop represents a significant success for the economic connection of the region to larger economic areas in Austria. Thanks to the commissioning of the Koralmbahn, the southern railway in Carinthia will be significantly upgraded and travel options will improve enormously.

The travel times are also impressive: from Graz to Kühnsdorf it will now only take 33 minutes, and passengers will travel to Klagenfurt in 42 minutes. The free seat reservation in the new high-speed trains that WESTbahn will operate from March also provides additional comfort. These trains can carry up to 422 passengers and, in addition to leather seating, offer power sockets at every seat.

A milestone for the region

State Transport Councilor Sebastian Schuschnig describes the stop in Kühnsdorf as an “important breakthrough for the region”. Not only commuter traffic benefits from the route, but also tourism. “There is something going on,” explains Schuschnig, who is optimistic that the ÖBB will also stop on the route at some point. A shuttle service to the popular Klopeiner See already exists, and the Postbus shuttles also offer additional connections.

The new WESTbahn timetable has already been drawn up: the trains will race along the new southern route at speeds of up to 250 km/h. The provisional timetable shows that the WESTbahn runs from Vienna via Graz and Klagenfurt to Villach. The exact departure times are very attractive for travelers.

In addition to the Austrian Climate Ticket and the Kärnten Ticket, there will be various pricing models, which have not yet been announced. Hannes Mak, the mayor of Gallicia, also sees this new stop as a major advantage for local tourism and the economy. Those responsible here have shown “a good hand” by improving the communities’ connections to national transport routes.

This opens a new chapter for the outside world. From March 2026, says WESTbahn board member Marco Ramsbacher, travelers can look forward to better accessibility and shorter travel times, which will put the Kühnsdorf-Klopeiner See region on the map. “Let’s get ready for the future,” concludes Ramsbacher.
