New Göttingen Hospital: 150 million euros for the future!
A major construction project is underway in Göttingen that is intended to sustainably improve health care in the region. The Protestant Hospital Göttingen-Weende (EKW) is planning a comprehensive new building, the investment sum of which is estimated at an impressive 150 million euros. Work on this is scheduled to begin in 2026 and be completed by 2031. This new building, which will integrate the Neu-Mariahilf location, is an important step towards expanding and modernizing the medical infrastructure.
The planning is already advanced. Managing director Frank Czeczelski, who will retire in 2026 after 21 years at EKW, and his successor Hauke Heißmeyer, who took over management in July 2025, have already held discussions with future users of the new hospital. Negotiations are currently underway with the state of Lower Saxony to secure financing.
Planned facilities and operations
Numerous modern facilities are planned in the new building. The central emergency room (ZNA) and radiology are located on the ground floor. The first floor will house the new operating wing as well as urological, cardiological and angiological functional areas. The intensive care unit (ITS) and intermediate care (IMC) are located on the second floor. Additional projectiles will target general medical wards.
An important aspect of the EKW is the constantly increasing number of patients. In 2013, the hospital cared for 18,400 inpatients, while the number rose to 24,500 in 2024. The EKW operates almost 40 medical care centers in the region and has around 140,000 patient contacts annually. Over 2,000 employees, including more than 140 who have been in service for over 30 years, ensure first-class medical care.
Innovations and collaborations
With regard to medical technologies, the EKW relies on modern surgical techniques. From autumn 2025, a “Cori robot” will be used at this location for knee arthroplasty, while a “da Vinci Xi surgical robot” is already being used for urological and surgical procedures. In addition, the EKW cooperates with regional partners in various areas, from food provision to rehabilitation medicine.
Another important element is training in the health sector. The EKW nursing vocational school offers 150 training places, with two courses each year offering 25 places. Cooperations with the University Medical Center Göttingen and Health North Hesse complement this training offer.
In summary, the EKW is well on the way to further improving its already high quality of care, while preparations for the new hospital wing are in full swing. The region will appreciate that there is significant investment in the future here. The HNA reports that the progressive planning is already well advanced and is thus making a significant contribution to improving health care.
