The new Naschpark is blooming in Vienna: 50,000 plants for a better quality of life!
Today, September 15, 2025, a new green centerpiece was opened in Vienna: the Naschpark, which was created from a former parking lot at the Naschmarkt. With an area of around 6,800 square meters, the park is an exciting place for all Viennese and guests. More than 50,000 plants and almost 70 trees have found their new home here, including the characteristic apple trees, which live up to the name “Naschpark”. This green paradise was created with an investment of 9 million euros to bring the city closer to nature while creating a cozy place to stay.
From shady pergolas and comfortable seating to water areas and balancing equipment – the Naschpark offers numerous areas that invite you to linger. Particularly noteworthy is the newly designed 200 meter long pink two-way cycle path along Wienzeile, which ensures that cyclists and pedestrians can coexist harmoniously here. This not only promotes mobility, but also makes access to green living space easier.
An event for the whole family
The official opening of the Naschpark will be celebrated on September 19, 2025 with a large family celebration. From 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., visitors can enjoy, among other things, a free chocolate fountain, a bouncy castle and a bicycle course. Live music creates the right atmosphere and invites you to enjoy the new green oasis to the fullest.
The design of the park, which had to meet special static requirements, is particularly interesting. These are necessary because the park is located above the vault of the Vienna River and the subway. To avoid damage to roots, a reinforced concrete slab with a protective layer is used. In addition, five XXL trees will be planted along the Rechte Wienzeile in the next few weeks, which will enhance the park visually and ecologically.
Progressive urban design
The Naschpark is part of an overarching trend that focuses on sustainable urban design and urban gardening. These concepts are gaining importance worldwide and not only promote a sense of community, but also actively contribute to improving air quality and biodiversity in urban areas. Urban gardening transforms unused areas into green oases and enables city residents to actively participate in the production of local food. Not only is this environmentally friendly, but it is also a valuable educational resource that promotes an understanding of seasonal and local products. The Revierkucker highlights how green infrastructure helps mitigate urban heat islands and improve the energy efficiency of buildings.
The Naschpark is another important step towards a natural and livable city. The redesign of the Naschmarkt will also continue and a new market space for regional products is planned for autumn 2023. The Naschpark will therefore not only be a place for relaxation, but also a lively marketplace that will strengthen the local economy.
But the heart of the park remains the consumption-free lounge, which invites you to experience nature up close and leave everyday life behind. The opening is awaited with great anticipation and offers all residents and visitors a green break in the heart of Vienna. ORF Vienna provides further information about this exciting project.
