WienMobil Hop in Liesing: End after three and a half years!

The end of a popular mobility offer is looming: TheWienMobil Hopperwill be discontinued at the end of October 2025 after three and a half years of operation in the 23rd district of Liesing. When the on-demand service was launched in 2022, there was great hope that it would revolutionize public transport in this part of Vienna. But the latest evaluation has revealed shocking results.

According to 5min.at, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO) showed that the additional benefit of this project was not sufficient. This discovery is all the more regrettable because, according to district chairman Matthias Schiffer, the offer in Liesing could have been a valuable addition. “The Hopper” raised many hopes, but improved public connections put a damper on the offer. Schiffer emphasizes that the expansion of weak cross-connections in Liesing is necessary in order to further promote mobility in the region.

Evaluation and backgrounds

When the test phase began in March 2022, passengers in Liesing were allowed to book a wheelchair-accessible e-minibus using an app that automatically bundled requests with similar routes. However, despite this latest technology and modern approach, the service could not keep up with existing improvements in scheduled services. Wiener Districtblatt states that the hopping in Liesing is being discontinued for economic reasons, while in the same breath the test project in the Danube city is being further expanded. The settlement structure and the line offerings in the Danube city made the pilot project there much more successful.

The pilot project in the Danube city, which was launched in autumn 2023, is very popular and shows promising development. Here, passengers are also able to use the new mobility solutions that are gaining momentum. Wiener Linien provides information about progress and future expansions.

A look into the future

The coming weeks will be crucial. While the offer in Liesing will soon be a thing of the past, many residents of the Danube city are in the starting blocks to test the improved mobility offer. The success in Donaustadt, an hour and a half away, could serve as a model for future projects and shows that not all innovative approaches can reap the same success. One could almost say: Where a hop ends, there might be a new beginning somewhere else!
