Major closures in Vienna's transport network: This is what awaits you this summer!

Summer time is also a construction phase in Vienna: From June 28, 2025, the S-Bahn main line between Floridsdorf and Praterstern will be closed for around two months. A comprehensive rail replacement service will be set up by September 1st, running under the SV900 and SV905 bus routes. This measure is part of a larger plan to modernize and renew Vienna's transport network, which is particularly in focus this year ÖAMTC reported.

The S40 is also affected, as the rail replacement service will be activated during the closure between Klosterneuburg-Weidling and St. Andrä-Wördern from June 29th to September 1st, 2025. Trains on the R40 and REX4 lines will be completely canceled during this period, which means a change for many commuters.

U4 and track work

The U4 will also be severely affected: the routes between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke will be closed from June 28th to August 31st, 2025. Here the U4 is only active between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke and between Schottenring and Hütteldorf. Good news: There are replacement lines available, such as the E4 tram line and the rerouted D line, which runs from Nußdorf to Schottenring, like the Vienna lines confirm.

The background to this extensive work is the age structure of the U4, whose tunnel infrastructure is now over 120 years old. To ensure reliability and safety in traffic, track and switch work is essential. At the same time, the track infrastructure on various other lines, including the U6, is also being modernized - which is why the Tscherttegasse station will only be served in the direction of Siebenhirten until December 2025.

More fights for space

These extensive renovations are not limited to the subway and S-Bahn. Closures and diversions for lines 1, 2, 71 and D will also be in force on the Ringstrasse from June 28th to the end of August 2025. The reason is massive track and switch work that affects these main traffic arteries. For many travelers, this means that they have to adapt to changing traffic conditions.

The enormous track work is also continuing elsewhere. From July 1st to the end of August, the tracks on Kärntner Ring, Universitätsring and Schubertring will be replaced, which will also lead to restrictions on various lines. For many travelers, the following applies: be more patient and use alternative means of transport, because the Wiener Linien have announced that they will increase the intervals for other lines, such as the U6 and numerous tram lines, near the construction sites.

A look into the future

The modernization and network expansion of Wiener Linien will continue beyond 2025. From autumn 2025, passengers can look forward to new tram lines 12 and 27, and the extension of line 18 to the stadium is also already being planned. As the ORF reports, this renewal is part of a large-scale modernization offensive that began in 2024 and is now gaining momentum.

The summer months present some challenges for Viennese commuters, but with a good hand and the right planning nothing stands in the way of a stress-free journey.
