Five young people caught in a burglary in Vienna-Liesing – perpetrators escape!

A scandalous incident occurred on Wednesday evening in a quiet residential area in Vienna-Liesing. Five teenagers broke into a workshop around 9:45 p.m., which put witnesses on alert. A passer-by saw the group climb over a fence and tamper with two parked cars in the courtyard. Two of the boys ransacked a vehicle and fled when they were noticed. However, the alerted police were able to catch four suspects who exactly matched the description. Courier reports.

Among those arrested were three 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old girl. The investigators focused on an Austrian, a Syrian and a Serb as well as an Austrian teenager. Two of the 16-year-olds, who already have previous convictions, were taken directly to a prison. The other two, who were reported at large, had no stolen goods with them, but the police were able to seize items that could have come from the ransacked car. A fifth suspect, who is still at large, is also believed to be male and young.

Overview of juvenile crime

The police are assuming that the problem of juvenile crime is increasing. In general, it can be said that this area is not exclusively a minority issue. Many youth who commit crimes stop once they grow up, which is backed up by statistics. These numbers make it clear that the majority of young people only commit minor crimes and serious forms of crime are rather rare.

A nationwide student survey from 2007/2008 showed that 43.7 percent of male and 23.6 percent of female students said they had committed a crime. According to current surveys from Lower Saxony, 53.5 percent of male and 45.6 percent of female students said they had committed a crime in the last year. The average police clearance rate is 58.7 percent, but varies depending on the crime.

Another interesting detail about juvenile crime is that young people with a migrant background are often both victims and perpetrators. These complex social conditions show how important comprehensive prevention work is. According to Courier The focus of prevention should increasingly be placed on social integration and education in order to address these problems sustainably.
