ATM explosion in Donaustadt: perpetrators fled on a moped!

On Sunday, around 3:45 a.m., an ATM explosion occurred in Vienna-Donaustadt, keeping the minds of residents and the security authorities on edge. Two masked men appear to have made a late-night trip to a supermarket, at least judging by the forced entry they gained by destroying the sliding glass door. The explosion of an explosive device at the ATM not only led to significant material damage in the entrance area, but also to the third explosion of this type within a week in Vienna. The police were quickly alerted and found a badly damaged ATM in the foyer of the store, while the perpetrators fled with their loot on a moped or motorcycle. Where did the journey lead? In the direction of Saikogasse, according to the investigators' first indications.

This explosion is not just an isolated incident, but part of a worrying series. According to the The press This is the 23rd ATM explosion since the beginning of 2025, and the frequency of such incidents in the city is alarmingly high. Another incident occurred on Monday night in Vienna-Liesing, while there was a failed attempt in Brunn am Gebirge on Friday night. Unfortunately, the true amount of loot remains unclear as fears of further raids grow.

Special investigation team in action

In order to counteract this wave of crime, a special investigation group was formed by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office. Investigators are doing everything they can to clarify the background. Initial indications suggest that a criminal organization from the Netherlands is behind the crimes; The cooperation between the security authorities is therefore more relevant than ever. The public is called upon to submit information anonymously to the police or the Vienna State Criminal Police Office.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has already taken measures to reduce the threat of ATM explosions. On April 11, 2025, he signed a security pact with the banking industry that is clearly directed against organized crime. This happened as part of a banking summit attended by high-ranking representatives of various security and banking institutions, including Michael Höllerer, the general director of the WKÖ federal banking and insurance division. Höllerer took the security of customers and employees very seriously and announced preventive technical measures to make banks less attractive to criminals.

The active members of the SOKO ATM, which was set up in the Federal Criminal Police Office, have already achieved initial success in solving their cases. A first suspect was caught in Vienna, which strengthens the state and the investigative authorities in their efforts to put a stop to the activities of the ATM robbers.

It remains to be seen whether these measures will be effective and whether the horrific series of ATM blasts will soon come to an end. One thing is certain: there is something in the air here, and the people of Vienna are hoping for clarification and a safe environment as quickly as possible.
