Amazon in Vienna-Liesing: busy in the largest distribution center!
The beating heart of one of Amazon's newest logistics projects beats in the heart of Vienna-Liesing. The distribution center, which has been in operation for five years, has established itself as a central element in the daily movement of goods and ensures that Viennese orders are delivered quickly and reliably. 160 employees now work here, processing between 40,000 and 60,000 packages every day, depending on seasonal fluctuations and holiday rush. In the spacious hall of almost 8,000 square meters, the most modern systems for parcel distribution are used in order to meet the enormous requirements. Viena.at provides detailed insights into the operation.
The logistics processes are consistently efficient: around 15 to 20 semi-trailer trucks roll up to the gates of the distribution center every day. They bring the packages by truck to the hall, where they are immediately packed and delivered to the customers on the same day. Over 250 tours are carried out per day, which also lead to the neighboring federal states of Lower Austria and Burgenland. Impressive punctuality is achieved: around 90 percent of the journeys are completed on schedule or even faster.
The increase in personnel and challenges
The logistics centers receive special quantities of packages, especially during holidays and discount campaigns. In order to meet the increased need for personnel, operators are relying on flexible solutions. Interestingly, it turns out that shipping is often done in original boxes, which not only saves resources but also contributes to sustainability.
Delivery is carried out via cooperating third-party companies, which makes Amazon more independent of major standards such as Austrian Post or DHL. Robert Viegers, Director of Amazon Logistics, emphasizes that this development benefits customers as they can benefit from faster and more flexible delivery options. Amazon's first parcel distribution center in Austria was opened in Großebersdorf in autumn 2018.
The logistics industry in Austria
A look at the entire logistics and transport industry in Austria shows how important this sector of the economy is for the country. According to Statista, around 785 million tons of goods were transported in 2021, and the transport volume reached a record level of around 96 billion ton-kilometers. The logistics industry covers a variety of areas, from freight forwarding to warehousing to packaging.
In total, around 13,100 companies were active in the freight transport industry in 2021, which means around 76,800 jobs. However, this industry faces challenges, including labor shortages during the Corona crisis and pressure to develop more sustainable models. In February 2023, for example, an action by the financial police against suspected illegal work was carried out in one of the distribution centers, which shows that such issues are not left out in the logistics industry either.
The exciting development of Amazon's distribution center in Vienna-Liesing not only illustrates the company's innovative strength, but also the dynamic evolutionary direction of the logistics industry in Austria. The gradual progress towards faster and more efficient deliveries is a trend that is not only crucial for online retail, but also reflects the expectations and needs of consumers. In a world where convenience and speed are at a premium, competition in logistics will continue to intensify.
