Groundbreaking ceremony for new musical house: Cultural center is being built in the Prater!

Yesterday, on October 27, 2025, the first symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the eagerly awaited “Theater im Prater” took place in the Vienna Prater. This new musical theater promises not only a cultural highlight, but also a significant source of economic stimulus for the region. Those present included, among others, City Councilor for Finance Barbara Novak, NEOS economic spokesman Markus Ornig and district leader Alexander Nikolai. Joachim Hilke, CEO of ATG Entertainment Central Europe, and Matthias Prichzi, Managing Director of ATG-Live GmbH, also didn't miss the event, as meinbezirk.at reports.

With an investment volume of a whopping 100 million euros, a sustainable project is being launched here that is intended to create 400 new jobs. Those responsible expect an annual added value of around 100 million euros. The operators, ATG Entertainment GmbH, already have renowned experience with 72 other theaters worldwide, which speaks for high quality and appealing productions. The new theater is expected to have 1,800 seats and will bring international productions to Vienna.

Cultural center for the Wurstelprater

The Theater im Prater should not only be a place for performances, but also represent a new cultural center in the Wurstelprater. The City of Vienna is relying on an innovative partnership between the public sector and private commitment, which aims to create a new attraction for those interested in culture and at the same time provide impulses for tourism and gastronomy, as stated in a statement from the Wiener City administration.

The planning of the new building was organized by the Viennese architectural firm Dietrich Untertrifaller (DTFLR) in collaboration with a partner from London. The multiple functions of the building will be exciting: In addition to its musical use, the theater will also act as a noise barrier for the surrounding area, which will benefit the residents.

A look at the schedule

Construction will begin in February 2026 with structural work. The first visible progress can be expected from September 2026. The shell construction should then be completed in December 2026 with the roof leveling, followed by interior work and technical equipment. A big premiere is planned for November 27, 2027, which all musical fans in Vienna can look forward to.

With its longevity and the high expected number of visitors of over 500,000 per year, which according to an impact study could even rise to 593,000, the “Theater im Prater” is positioning itself as a significant player in Vienna’s cultural landscape. A good hand is definitely being shown here – both for art and for the economic development of the city. All eyes are now on the Prater and what will grow here in the coming years.
