Leopoldstadt 2026: Grätzlmistplatz, long-distance bus terminal and citizen participation!
Exciting developments will continue in 2026 in the “most beautiful district in the world”. District leader Alexander Nikolai (SPÖ) has an interview with My district the most important topics for the Leopoldstadt district are outlined. The Grätzlmistplatz is taking shape while the construction of the long-distance bus terminal progresses tirelessly. However, the everyday budget situation challenges those responsible, as the district budget has to be cut by almost 900,000 euros.
“However, art and culture, child and youth care, educational institutions and senior citizens’ issues remain unchanged,” explains Nikolai. As another plan for the coming year, he mentioned the redesign of the Allied Road, which had to be reduced from the original 2 million euros to 1.5 million euros. This also shows the current push for citizen participation, especially for the more than 150-year-old community Taborstrasse, which is one of the most important main streets in the heart of Leopoldstadt.
Taborstrasse – the pulse of Leopoldstadt
Taborstrasse, known for its diverse local scene and as a popular shopping street, is not only an economic but also a social hub for the district. Thanks to its lively mix of shops, restaurants and cultural institutions, including the charming Karmelitermarkt, the area has developed into a highly sought-after residential area in recent years. Nikolai also highlights the challenging problem of short-term rentals: “Illegal rentals are checked by the building police,” he says and explains that the city is actively taking action against grievances. “Improving the ambience is high on the agenda,” he adds.
There is also a lot of discussion regarding the planned locations for manure dumps. Two citizens' meetings in January are intended to enable a constructive dialogue with the population and real estate planners at BA 48. “Citizen participation is not an empty word, but essential for our urban development,” explains Nikolai. He sees positive communication with the city as a great advantage, even if there is not always a common opinion.
On the way to a racism-free zone
But the district leader doesn't just have an eye on finances and urban development. Cohesion in the district is particularly important to him. “I want a place that is there for everyone – a racism-free zone,” emphasizes Nikolai and is therefore also committed to an inclusive and cosmopolitan Leopoldstadt. The social, economic and ecological challenges affecting urban development should not be underestimated. Topics such as climate change and education are of great importance here
