Drama broke out in Leopoldstadt on Tuesday evening when a 44-year-old man shot his estranged wife. The ongoing tensions in the marriage, which had arisen due to jealousy and an impending divorce, escalated fatally. The perpetrator, a Serb, had been known to the police for years and had nevertheless not complied with a weapons ban that was imposed due to an incident in 2014.
The accident occurred when the man tried to get personal items from the shared apartment. A heated argument broke out during which he shot his wife. Tragically, the couple's 24-year-old daughter was also seriously injured and later died in hospital.
To make matters worse, several minors were present at the time of the crime and had to witness the brutal event, which makes the situation all the more dramatic.
The background: violence and gun laws
The police were informed about the perpetrator's dangerousness and had already registered several complaints against him, including for dangerous threats and violations of the weapons law. The violence protection center was also informed, which is standard procedure in such cases. However, it remains unclear why the judiciary did not take decisive action in this case. At the time of the crime, the man's firearms ban was still in effect.
The question always arises as to whether existing laws are sufficient to prevent such tragedies. In the US, for example, the Supreme Court has upheld a gun ban for perpetrators of domestic violence, seen as a crucial step to protect those affected. According to the decision, it is constitutional to temporarily disarm people who pose a credible threat to the physical safety of others. In total, over 75,000 gun sales have been stopped in the last 25 years due to existing laws daily news reported.

The problem surrounding gun ownership is not only important in the USA. In Germany, for example, where the gun law amendment laws were tightened a few years ago, current statistics show that there were a total of 3,018,856 gun law permits at the end of June 2025, which represents an increase compared to previous years. These statistics make it clear that the discussion about gun laws remains relevant.
In total, there were 932,074 private gun owners in Germany, according to information from the BVA.
The tragic events in Vienna also raise the question of how society and authorities can continue to work together on solutions that have a preventative effect and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The police investigation is ongoing and it remains to be hoped that those affected in similar situations can be better helped in the future.
