Café Leo: New meeting place in Vienna – tradition meets a breath of fresh air!
A piece of Viennese Beisl history is being reinterpreted: The Leopoldistüberl, which was run by Patrizia and Ernst for over 30 years and attracted numerous personalities such as the pimp Wilde Wanda and Marco Fitzthum from the band Wanda, is flourishing under a new name. Stefan Gredler, a 30-year-old furniture maker, took over the traditional restaurant at Leopoldsgasse 22 and opened it asCafe Leo.
Gredler came across the restaurant by chance when he was looking for storage space for his workshop. As part of the rental agreement, he received the historic pub and did not hesitate to implement his vision. Despite his lack of experience in the catering industry, he was able to find a silent partner in Laurin Mellem, co-owner of the popular bar “Gehsteig”. Together, they transformed the café through extensive renovations in just three months.
A breath of fresh air in the interior
The comprehensive renovation brought a breath of fresh air into the rooms: dark wooden paneling and the bar from the 1950s were removed, the false ceiling was torn down and the old illuminated lettering was redesigned to reflect the new name. The result is reflected in high windows, a light wooden floor and a successful mix of self-made items and stylish finds.
A new bar garden allows guests to enjoy Café Leo outdoors. These redesigns show that Gredler is not a professional restaurateur, but has a good feel for creating an inviting atmosphere and continuing to let the neighborhood enjoy the new space.
Diverse menu
Café Leo's culinary offerings include an interesting meat-free breakfast, which is available from 7.90 euros, and uses high-quality organic products. The coffee comes from the renowned Italian roasting company “Caffè Cavaliere”. Later in the day, the café transforms into a bar with a selection of long drinks, toast, Viennese tofu and tasty focaccia.
“I opened the café without a big concept,” says Gredler, who is pleased with the positive response from the neighborhood. The combination of tried-and-tested flair and modern accents seems to be working – Café Leo has established itself as a popular destination and is already doing well.
The Leopoldistüberl may be a thing of the past, but the new Café Leo shows that there is always room for fresh ideas in Vienna. Whether over a leisurely breakfast or a drink in the evening – neighborhood is very important here.
