Crime in Vienna: Jealousy leads to tragic family drama!

At dusk last Tuesday, a shocking incident occurred on Vorgartenstrasse in Vienna-Leopoldstadt. A 44-year-old Serb took the life of his estranged wife and inflicted serious injuries on his 24-year-old daughter and the daughter's partner, a 26-year-old. According to initial investigations, the tragedy, which occurred in an apartment building, is attributed to jealousy as the motive. The aggressive argument between the separated spouses escalated during a meeting where the perpetrator pulled out his illegal weapon and opened fire. This is reported by Heute and Die Presse.

Unfortunately, there is no good news at the moment. The 24-year-old is in critical condition after being shot in the head. Her friend, the 26-year-old, is in stable conditions and has already been transferred to a normal ward. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that three minors - including the 15-year-old daughter of those killed, as well as a baby and a toddler - were present in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but were uninjured. These were handed over to the care of the sister of the dead.

The escape of the perpetrator

After the terrible incident, the 44-year-old pointed his weapon at the arriving police officers, fired at them and then fled in a silver Mercedes. The perpetrator was later found lifeless in his vehicle. The circumstances of his death are still unclear; An autopsy will determine whether he committed suicide or was hit by police bullets. It is also noteworthy that the man had been banned from using weapons since 2014 and was in possession of the weapon illegally, the origin of which is currently still being determined, as Die Presse reports.

The Nikodemy studies and initiatives to protect against violent conflicts show that jealousy often forms a dangerous breeding ground that can lead to serious attacks in relationships. A study by the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony (KfN) illustrates that over half of the men surveyed have experienced violence in relationships, and the issue of violence against women is repeatedly pushed onto the public agenda. Especially in crisis situations such as those described here, it is even more important to create and maintain contact points and support facilities in order to support people in need, as becomes clear in the context of the study. According to Men's Violence Protection, there are currently only 15 shelters available for men nationwide and the offers of help are inadequate.

The incident in Vienna brings shockingly to light how a personal crisis can turn into a fatal escalation. The affected family members and friends of the victims are dependent on support. It remains to be hoped that, in light of this tragedy, more awareness will be created about the issues of intimate partner violence and appropriate support.
