Run against cancer: Together for research on October 4th in Vienna!
The 19th cancer research run will take place on October 4, 2025 under the motto“Together we go further”took place on the Altes AKH university campus in Vienna. This event aims to raise funds for important research projects at the Medical University of Vienna and 100% goes towards improving diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cancer.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants have the opportunity to run as many laps as they want on a 1.6-kilometer circuit. It's rare to have so much freedom when running: If you still don't make it to the main event, you can easily take part in the Distant Run on a route of your own choosing and have the kilometers you run count. More information about registration is available online at MedUni Vienna visible.
Together against cancer
The initiative is more important than ever: every year over 45,000 people in Austria are diagnosed with cancer, which affects men more often. Cancer is responsible for around a fifth of annual deaths in the population. But there are also positive developments: cancer mortality is falling, and the survival rate after 5 years rose from 55.8% in the years 1995 to 1999 to 63% in the period 2015 to 2019. This progress can be attributed, among other things, to innovative research projects that have been funded with over 2 million euros since the start of the cancer research run, such as science.apa.at reports.
Sponsors such as Boehringer Ingelheim, Roche and Amgen also offer a very special incentive: if you reach 30,000 rounds, the donation amount will be increased by 17,500 euros. This once again highlights the importance of private funding for cancer research, as public funding is often not sufficient to guarantee the necessary financial support, as Krebshilfe emphasizes.
Lively atmosphere and personal stories
A very special highlight of the event will be the participation of Matthias Farlik from MedUni Vienna, who is actively involved in the field of immune research. Colon cancer patient Maria Rainer will also talk about her personal experiences and explain how important research is for those affected.
In addition, a functional shirt in mauve is available for 25 euros, the proceeds of which also benefit cancer research. The participating partners and sponsors of the run know how important it is to raise awareness of this disease and to also become active in a sporting context.
For anyone interested, there are ongoing updates and information on the social media channels under the hashtag#cancerresearchrun. If you like spontaneity, you can also register directly on site. Starting numbers will be given out from 9 a.m.
In this motivating atmosphere, it becomes clear that every step counts - whether it's running or supporting research projects. With a good knack for research and a strong sense of community, we can continue to fight cancer together.
