Traffic chaos in Vienna! A23 and A4 affected by extensive construction sites
Important construction work on the A23 near Erdberg: renovations from November 2025, restrictions and traffic management until 2026.

Traffic chaos in Vienna! A23 and A4 affected by extensive construction sites
The A23, also known as the Südosttangente, is a hub in Vienna's traffic and, with around 230,000 vehicles per day, is one of the busiest roads in Austria. In particular, the section between the Prater junction and the Handelskai junction is in focus due to renovation work. This extensive work has become essential due to high traffic levels and the need to maintain infrastructure. How OEMTC reported, the renovation is taking place in both directions and is expected to last until December 2025.
It becomes particularly challenging on the nights of two weekends in November. On November 7th from 10:00 p.m. to November 9th at 9:00 a.m. and on November 14th from 10:00 p.m. to November 16th at 9:00 a.m. traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. During the day, however, road users have two lanes available to them. In addition, the exit from the A23 to the Favoriten junction heading south will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. due to the construction of a new retaining wall, so that only one lane is available.
“New Tangent” renovation project
The renovation project under the title “New Tangent” has been running for 15 years and remains a high priority. How ASFINAG As further explained, this project not only involves replacing road surfaces, but also sealing the bridge in the hard shoulder, replacing the damaged noise protection panels and completely replacing the 300 meter noise barrier.
In the first phase of the renovation, which starts on March 17, 2025 in the north direction, all four lanes in each direction will remain open to traffic. The hard shoulder is used as an additional lane in the southbound direction. This well thought-out traffic concept significantly reduces the susceptibility to traffic jams and shows that those responsible for the project have a good knack for traffic management.
Outlook for the coming months
The planned construction work also includes a winter break from October 2025 to March 2026, after which the renovation should take place in the opposite direction. From June 23rd, the renovation will be carried out in a similar sequence in the southbound direction. From March 2026 it will also be the turn of the Prater and Handelskai junctions, with completion aimed for by the end of August 2026.
In addition to the A23, disruptions due to paving work and repairs to bridges are also expected on the A4 between the Prater and Schwechat junctions by September 2026. The changed traffic routing allows at least two lanes on weekdays and stipulates a speed limit of 60 km/h with section control. The access ramp from S1 to the A4 towards Vienna will only have one lane until the end of October 2025.
The traffic situation in Vienna remains exciting and should be followed with attention, as it is not just about construction sites and diversions, but also about improving and safety of the infrastructure. Stay informed and plan your trips accordingly!
