Discover the Green Museum: art, nature and honey enjoyment in Vienna!
In the heart of Vienna, at Untere Weißgerberstraße 1, stands the KunstHausWien, a true architectural jewel that embodies the extraordinary vision of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This innovative artist, who was born Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna in 1928, left a lasting impression not only with his unique art, but also with his architectural masterpieces. The KunstHausWien is considered Austria's first “Green Museum” and offers an impressive collection of the world's largest permanent exhibition of his works. Here, art combines with nature and architecture in a unique way, making it a popular destination for art lovers and visitors to Vienna.
Hundertwasser was a vehement opponent of straight lines and standardization in architecture. His philosophy, based on harmony between man and nature, is evident in every corner of the museum. KunstHausWien is also actively committed to sustainability and sets ecological standards in many areas. A special highlight is the roof garden, where two bee colonies live and our own honey is produced. This honey is not only a treat, but also available in the museum shop.
A place of encounter and inspiration
The KunstHausWien attracts a wide range of visitors: whether alone, in pairs or in groups, everyone will find something for themselves here. In the relaxed atmosphere of the in-house Café Friedlich, you can reflect on your experiences with a cup of coffee or a piece of cake. The museum is barrier-free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the ticket office closing 30 minutes earlier.
The accessibility of the KunstHausWien is excellent. Guests can travel comfortably with the U4, U3 or U1 and only have to take a short walk. There are plenty of parking spaces for those who come by bike. If you arrive by car, you can park in the short-term parking zone in the 3rd district or use one of the nearby parking garages.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser and his legacy
Friedensreich Hundertwasser not only left behind a rich artistic legacy, but also campaigned for more humane architecture throughout his life. He was a pioneer in ecological construction, which is reflected in his projects such as the famous Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna and the Hundertwasserhaus Waldspirale in Germany. Not only was he a visionary, but also an active part of the international avant-garde in Paris in the 1950s, where he developed his distinctive visual language. His works can be seen all over the world; they embody diversity, organic shapes and a deep connection with nature.
Hundertwasser's approach was more than just a stylistic choice; it was a manifesto against the unbridled growth and social conformity of his time. With his catalog of artistic views, his manifestos and public demonstrations, he tried to persuade society to rethink and promote a respectful approach to the environment.
KunstHausWien is more than an art museum. It is a lively place of exchange that inspires and stimulates thought. Anyone who comes here will not only experience Hundertwasser's art, but also his ideals of sustainability and humanity. As Hundertwasser might have put it: “Art is the essence of life that invites us to see the world through different eyes.”
