Brazen criminals in Vienna: Police stop serial burglars!
On Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., the police in Vienna's Landstrasse district became aware of three suspected serial criminals who were making a suspicious spectacle while observing parked vehicles. The Street Crime Task Force (EGS) targeted the men as they attempted to block car radio keys using a so-called jammer, also known as a jammer. This method is a common technique among car thieves to facilitate theft by preventing legitimate vehicle owners from properly locking their cars. How Today reported, in one case it was actually possible to interrupt the radio connection, which meant that the vehicle remained unlocked.
The men, aged 33, 39 and 54 and all from Georgia, took advantage and ransacked the interior of the unlocked vehicle. Fortunately, there were no valuables in the vehicle, which made the matter less lucrative for the criminals. Nevertheless, they were temporarily arrested by the police and the investigation was taken over by the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, Center-East branch.
Stolen items and the arrest
Investigators seized several pieces of evidence during the arrest. Among other things, a jammer disguised as a battery pack was found on one of the suspects, which is considered an important piece of evidence in this case. The officers also found burglary tools such as adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers and crowbars in the men's vehicle. This indicates a clear intention to commit commercial burglaries, a suspicion that is now being investigated in more detail.
It is not without reason that such incidents and the increasing readiness of the police are a hotly debated topic among the public. The perception of crime has changed in recent years. Many Austrians are concerned about feeling safe, which is made more difficult by the increase in certain crimes that can affect people's sense of security. According to police crime statistics, despite a decrease in the total number of crimes, thefts and property crimes increased sharply in 2024, which further illustrates that the crime rate in urban areas remains high. Statista highlights that specific criminal activities, such as burglary, continue to pose a challenge for law enforcement authorities.
In summary, this incident shows how vigilant the police in Vienna are and how important it is to report suspicious activity. In the case of the Georgians, the intervention was successful and the clutch of the crime was interrupted before more serious damage could occur.
In the future, the Vienna police will continue to do everything in their power to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent planned crimes in order to strengthen the feeling of security in the city. For everyone who is out and about in urban areas: keep your eyes open, because “something is happening”!
