Billa relies on security: new locks to protect against theft!

A new wind is blowing through Billa's Vienna branches: The company has announced that it will introduce innovative security systems to meet the increasing challenges in retail. In this context, security gates will be installed at selected locations, including Rochusplatz and Swatoschgasse. These so-called postage mats cost more than 10,000 euros each and are used particularly in busy branches with high inventory losses.

After paying at a self-service checkout, the customer is issued a receipt with a QR code, which is necessary to open the barriers. Billa does not want to suspect all customers of theft, but rather specifically curbs economic losses caused by theft, as Kosmo reports. The company emphasizes that checkout staff will continue to be available to provide support should there be any problems with the new system.

Investment step into the future

The investments of over 35 million euros that Billa is planning for 2025 are part of a comprehensive modernization program in Vienna. In addition to security systems, investments should also be made in photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient refrigeration cabinets and resource-saving construction methods. These measures not only secure over 8,300 jobs in the city, but also help promote regionality and local supply, as Billa also works with over 530 local producers.

In recent years, security technology has developed from pure theft protection to an indispensable component of efficient business processes. Modern technologies enable retailers to leverage existing security systems beyond their original purpose and automate processes to optimize energy consumption. For example, lighting can be controlled intelligently and product quality can be ensured through sensors, as Securitas explains.

A holistic approach

Although the use of electronic article surveillance systems is widespread in retail, this protection is often not enough. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), the retail shrinkage rate increased from 1.4% to 1.6%. Amounts lost through internal theft can be exorbitant. To counteract this, additional security measures are required that go far beyond classic article surveillance devices. Modern video surveillance technologies and intelligent surveillance systems can help to identify potential risks at an early stage, as Euro-Security stated.

In summary, Billa is taking a step in the right direction with the new security gates in order to minimize economic losses while not affecting the shopping experience for customers. This would allow the retailer to position itself not only more securely but also for the future, while at the same time placing a strong focus on sustainable and regional solutions.
