Kammerspiele Josefstadt: Humor, depth and Christmas magic!
The Kammerspiele der Josefstadt, an integral part of Vienna's theater landscape for over 115 years, offers urban and intelligent entertainment on its small but fine stage. With 394 seats, the theater creates space for direct acting, which director Herbert Föttinger has been repositioning since 2006. Under his leadership, the stage has developed into a place for contemporary urban comedy that presents humorous, profound and socially relevant productions. There are currently three pieces playing here that are thrilling the audience.
One of the striking productions is “Easter” by Daniel Kehlmann, a work commissioned by the Theater in der Josefstadt. This satirical chamber play takes a look at a society in a state of emergency that was sent into isolation during the first Corona lockdown. Kehlmann, one of the most successful German-speaking authors of today, addresses quarantine, regulations and the associated changes in his work. Using a poetic-surreal style, daily life and the associated fears and hopes are illuminated in a dark but humorous way. “Easter” not only offers a current reference, but also stimulates thought about freedom and responsibility. This production is Kehlmann's fourth premiere at the theater, following his previous successes "The Mentor", "Christmas Eve" and "The Journey of the Lost".
Socially relevant comedy
Another highlight in the repertoire is the “Confessions of the Imposter Felix Krull” by Thomas Mann, which illuminates the topics of identity and ambition in a humorous way. In this comedy, Claudius von Stolzmann shines in the lead role and takes the audience into the world of the conman who tries to find his place through charming manipulations.
And of course “Miss Scrooge – A Christmas Tale” is also on the schedule, which premieres on November 16th. This adaptation of Charles Dickens takes audiences to the Swinging Sixties and is led by the talented Maria Köstlinger. Humor, music and emotions come together here and promise an entertaining evening for young and old.
