Three new crosswalks in Josefstadt - security for pedestrians!

Today, a significant step is to improve pedestrian security in Josefstadt. In the latest district council meeting, three applications for the expansion of pedestrian protection measures were presented. These applications contribute to making the district safer for the pedestrians.

Two of the three applications were brought in by the SPÖ. The first application concerns the Albertgasse/Josefstädter Straße intersection, where a zebra crossing is planned. Here the SPÖ calls for a review of the possibility of an acoustic traffic light to improve the situation for blind and visually impaired people. This was lively discussed at the meeting, with Markus Mondre stimulated an assignment to the traffic commission from the Greens. Sanja Drazic from the SPÖ, on the other hand, spoke out against this assignment and called for an immediate review. Ultimately, the application was assigned to the mobility commission with 18 to 17 votes.

new zebra crossing for the Pfeilgasse

The unanimous acceptance of a second application that calls for a new zebra crossing on Pfeilgasse, corner of Lerchengasse is particularly gratifying. District head Martin Fabisch supports this project because the problem has long been known at this strongly frequented place. Another application by the NEOS to relocate the zebra crossing in front of the Feldgasse high school, also accepted unanimously, aims to make the way to school safer for the students.

The relief with which zebra crossing can now be set up must be observed. According to the new STPO, foot traffic is considered "flowing traffic" and the provision of areas for pedestrians was greatly simplified. This means that zebra crossing is no longer necessarily linked to a special local danger situation, which should promote mobility in the city. ADFC emphasizes that the new regulations for the security of vulnerable road users want to promote.

The meaning of zebra crossing

zebra crossing is not only a helpful tool for pedestrians, but also for wheelchair users. They enable the crossing of streets compared to conventional traffic lights without additional queues. Nevertheless, there are important traffic rules that are particularly important for children. According to Verkehrswacht , care should only be made when all vehicles have stopped. Eye contact with the drivers is essential, as is the right behavior on crosswalks.

In summary, it can be said that the current developments in Josefstadt are an important step towards safe foot traffic. The creation of additional crosswalks not only promotes freedom of movement, but also the protection of the weakest road users. The examination of all applications by the MA 46 will be exciting and shows how important it is to combine security and mobility.
