Three new zebra crossings in Josefstadt – safety for pedestrians!

Today, a significant step is being taken to improve pedestrian safety in Josefstadt. At the most recent district council meeting, three proposals to expand pedestrian protection measures were presented. These applications will help make the district safer for pedestrians. MyDistrict reports that the aim of the initiatives is not only to create new crossings, but also to take into account the special needs of vulnerable road users.

Two of the three motions were submitted by the SPÖ. The first application concerns the intersection of Albertgasse and Josefstädter Straße, where a zebra crossing is planned. The SPÖ is calling for a review of the possibility of an acoustic traffic light in order to improve the situation for blind and visually impaired people. This was actively discussed at the meeting, with Markus Mondre from the Greens suggesting an allocation to the Transport Commission. Sanja Drazic from the SPÖ, however, spoke out against this allocation and called for an immediate review. Ultimately, the application was assigned to the Mobility Commission with 18 votes to 17.

New zebra crossing for Pfeilgasse

What is particularly gratifying is the unanimous acceptance of a second application, which calls for a new zebra crossing at the corner of Pfeilgasse and Lerchengasse. District head Martin Fabisch supports this project because the problem in this heavily frequented area has long been known. Another request from Neos to relocate the zebra crossing in front of the Feldgasse high school, also approved unanimously, aims to make the way to school safer for students.

Particular attention should be paid to the ease with which zebra crossings can now be set up. According to the new StVO, pedestrian traffic is considered “moving traffic” and the provision of space for pedestrians has been greatly simplified. This means that zebra crossings are no longer necessarily linked to a particular local danger situation, which should sustainably promote mobility in the city. ADFC emphasizes that the new regulations aim to promote preventive measures to ensure the safety of vulnerable road users.

The meaning of zebra crossings

Zebra crossings are not only a helpful tool for pedestrians, but also for wheelchair users. Compared to conventional traffic lights, they make it possible to cross streets without additional waiting patterns. However, there are important traffic rules that are particularly important for children. Loud Traffic Watch Care should be taken to ensure that children do not cross until all vehicles have stopped. Eye contact with drivers is essential, as is proper behavior at zebra crossings.

In summary, it can be said that the current developments in Josefstadt represent an important step towards safe pedestrian traffic. Creating additional zebra crossings not only promotes freedom of movement, but also protects the most vulnerable road users. The examination of all applications by MA 46 will be exciting and shows how important it is to combine security and mobility.
