A festive highlight is coming to Vienna: The Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz has been named the most beautiful Christmas market in the world by CNN. A truly magical spectacle that attracts both locals and tourists every year. The festively decorated stands, the impressive Herzerl tree, the reindeer track as well as the large Ferris wheel and the ice rink for children are particularly highlighted. This year the market opens on November 14th and will remain open until December 26th, 2023. The Christmas Market Ice Dream will even be available until January 6, 2026 to extend the winter fun.
Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) underlines the immense importance of the market for the city, as it attracts over three million visitors every year. This popular market has been taking place on Rathausplatz for 50 years; the first stalls opened in 1975. For many people in Vienna it is an integral part of the Christmas season.

The oldest include the “Thomasmarkt” on Wiener Graben, which was built around 1600, the “Nikolo and Christmas market” from 1772 and the “Christkindlmarkt” on Am Hof square, which opened in 1842. It is no coincidence that it ranks among the top 3 worldwide, alongside other leaders such as the Basel and Strasbourg Christmas markets.
