Traditions and Origins of Halloween

Halloween, or as it is also known, All Hallows' Eve, has its roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marks the evening before All Souls' Day. Originally seen as a time when the line between the living and the dead was blurred, fire was lit and masks were used to drive away ghosts. Over the last few centuries, Halloween has developed into a lavish festival that is celebrated in both Europe and North America. In the United States, the custom of trick-or-treating is extremely popular, which is essentially a form of mummery where children go from door to door collecting candy.

The custom of the Jack-o'-Lantern, originally originating from turnips in Ireland, is now carried out in the bright pumpkins that can be found in every other garden. Historically, the first records of Halloween began in the 7th century, but today's traditions remain largely untouched by religious customs and have evolved into an almost pure festival full of fun and horror.

However you celebrate Halloween - whether at one of the many parties, a spooky event or at home with a good horror film - Vienna has something to offer for everyone. Take the chance to transform yourself into a scary creature and enjoy the many events! Whether elegant or subtly spooky – let yourself be carried away by the magic of this special night!
