Heat wave and risk of thunderstorms: Is the storm coming to Vienna?
Summer is showing its hottest side in Vienna: today, July 3, 2025, the hottest day of the year so far is expected. The heat wave, which has been over the city for several days, is now reaching its peak. Temperatures of up to 33 degrees are not excluded. [MeinBezirk] reports that the humidity of the last few days is accumulating in the Viennese air and the question now arises as to whether the weather also has a cooling surprise in store.
Due to the tense situation, weather service GeoSphere has issued a warning for summer thunderstorms. While two storm cells are moving in the north (Waldviertel) and south (Rax/Schneeberg) of Vienna, the probability that they will reach the city directly remains rather low at the moment. Nevertheless, the yellow warning level applies to the entire city, which means that careful preparations are recommended.
Storm approaching?
The developments in the coming hours will be crucial. While the storm fronts have so far only moved slowly and are spreading weakly, a large number of thunderstorm and hail symbols are already visible on the warning map around Vienna. Experts emphasize that if the thunderstorms actually reach Vienna, the northern and southern areas of the city would mainly be affected.
The forecast for Friday shows that it will initially remain cloudy. Rain showers and strong thunderstorms can occur again and again, which may dampen the actual heat somewhat. According to [Vol.at], the shower activity shifted to the south and east of Austria from midday onwards and the sun could shine again north of the Alps.
Outlook for the weekend
However, the weather is expected to calm down over the weekend: temperatures will remain high and temperatures can reach 25 to 32 degrees. However, caution is advised, as thunderstorms could form again between Vorarlberg and the Mariazeller Land from the morning hours onwards. Sunday also brings further changes in the weather, with clouds becoming thicker around midday and showers and thunderstorms spreading. A temperature increase of up to 33 degrees is forecast here.
The forecast for the coming week also shows changeable weather. On Monday temperatures may drop to 20 to 28 degrees and dense clouds and repeated rain showers are expected, especially between East Tyrol and southern Burgenland. Tuesday will also remain unsettled with more rain showers, while maximum temperatures will only be between 16 and 25 degrees.
The entire area surrounding Vienna is therefore under observation. Strong thunderstorms, heavy rain and even hail are expected in neighboring communities such as Amstetten, Baden and Neunkirchen. [Weather Warnings] shows that strong thunderstorms can also be expected in cities like Wiener Neustadt and Mödling.
It remains to be seen whether we will spend the day today being cooled down by thunderstorms or dry in the scorching heat. What is certain is that things will continue to be turbulent in the next few days and it is worth keeping a close eye on the weather situation!
