Health awareness on the square Am Hof: Vienna focuses on prevention!
An exciting health promotion initiative is being launched in Vienna today. The Vienna Medical Association's “Health Action Day”, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Am Hof square, not only brings together well-known faces, but also sends a powerful message about the importance of prevention in medical care. Among the participants we expect Mayor Michael Ludwig, Health Minister Korinna Schumann and Medical Association President Dr. Johannes Steinhart. The aim of this event is to raise awareness among the Viennese population about the importance of regular health examinations.
Particularly noteworthy is the walk-in colon model, which offers visitors clear lessons about colon cancer prevention. This represents an innovative and interactive approach to raise awareness of preventive measures. In view of increasing life expectancy and the associated challenges in the health sector, the focus of the event is on enabling low-threshold access to health information.
New health model for Vienna
One of the city's long-term ambitions is to establish Vienna as a global center for preventive medicine. As part of the “Vienna Prevention Project” (ViPP), a system is being developed to carry out regular and detailed examinations on a representative sample of 20,000 people. This initiative was launched by MedUni Vienna and the City of Vienna and aims to sustainably promote public health through improved prevention strategies. MedUni Vienna informs that The most modern methods of molecular and clinical medicine are used.
A central concern of the project is to understand individual differences in the development of diseases and to develop preventative measures based on this. This is also necessary because according to reports, the average healthy life expectancy in Austria is only 57 years, which is alarming. MedUni Vienna emphasizes that The current approach to health is not enough preventative and too much reparative.
Strengthening primary care
As part of the health care reform, primary care was also strengthened as the first point of contact for health-related concerns. These first-class care sites, which take place in general practices and primary care units (PVE), aim to promote population health and strengthen prevention. The Ministry of Social Affairs reports that Well-developed PVEs can significantly improve the care of chronically ill people.
A team-based approach in these communities enables comprehensive treatment for patients. This multi-disciplinarity ensures easier scheduling, shortened waiting times and flexible opening hours, which primarily benefits the doctors' work-life balance. Thanks to the health care reform of 2013 and further measures until 2023, the expansion of primary care will be continuously supported, with the federal government providing 300 million euros annually from 2024 to 2028.
In summary, it shows that Vienna is on a promising path to significantly improving healthcare through prevention and modern medical approaches. Today's event is not only intended to provide the population with better information, but also to give them an impetus to critically question their own health behavior.
