Drastic traffic changes in Vienna: All information about the diversions!

Viennese road users will have to prepare for a number of restrictions on public transport in the summer of 2025. As the MyDistrict reported, the measures primarily affect the districts of Innere Stadt (1st), Alsergrund (9th) and Döbling (19th). In the period from June 28th to August 31st, 2025, extensive track construction work will be carried out, which will make it necessary to reroute numerous lines.

The most affected connections include the U4 and tram lines D, 1, 2 and 71. The tram lines will be rerouted between Schwarzenbergplatz and Börse. Travelers should therefore prepare for detours via Stubentor, Schwedenplatz and Schottenring. The work will begin on June 28th and will last, with several phases, until the end of August.

Specific changes at a glance

In the first phase from June 28th to June 30th, line 71 will only run between Kaiserebersdorf, Zinnergasse and Enkplatz. To compensate for the U4, which is closed due to tunnel renovations between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke, lines D and E4 are available. Line 1 between Schottentor and Schwarzenbergplatz is also used. The second phase will be active from July 1st, in which all trams between Volkstheater and Schwarzenbergplatz will be stopped. Line 2 will be diverted and travel via Schwedenplatz towards Friedrich-Engels-Platz. The third phase, in which line 71 will be completely eliminated, will only begin on July 30th.

In addition to these significant changes to traffic, extensive track renovations are also being planned in other parts of the city. According to information from the Vienna lines The tracks on Hütteldorfer Straße are expected to change from April. There is track work between Urban Loritz Platz and Baumgarten that will last until June 29, 2025. During this time, line 49 will be discontinued and line 52 will be extended to take over parts of the 49.

The next alternative options for passengers affected by the construction work will be the subway lines U3, U4 and the inner-city bus lines. Recommends FFI to switch to alternative lines such as the U3 and 9.

Patience and planning are required to best avoid the inconveniences of the summer months. Wiener Linien provides ongoing information about developments so that any unpleasant surprises can be included in the traffic navigation plan.
