Mayor pays tribute to Viennese acting legend Peter Weck on his 95th birthday
The Viennese cultural scene has a special reason to be happy: Peter Weck, the unforgettable actor and director, celebrated his 95th birthday on August 12, 2023. On the occasion of this remarkable anniversary, Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) presented him with the honorary gift from the City of Vienna as a sign of appreciation for his great contributions to art and culture.
Weck, who made waves with his roles in the “Sissi” trilogy as Archduke Karl-Ludwig and in the popular series “I Marry a Family,” is recognized not only in Austria but also internationally. Ludwig praised Weck's influence on the cultural map of Europe and his ability to sensitize generations to quality entertainment.
A life for the stage
Peter Weck was born on August 12, 1930 in Vienna as the second son of Leo Franz Weck. At the age of ten he joined the Vienna Boys' Choir, where he enjoyed great success as a soprano soloist. His international career began under the esteemed conductor Ferdinand Grossmann in Sweden and Spain. After his voice broke, he left the boys' choir in 1944 and chose a different route for a while.
But his love for the stage didn't let him go: After the war, he returned to Vienna, graduated from high school and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts before finally deciding to pursue acting. Weck's theater debut was in Klagenfurt in 1953, followed by an impressive engagement at the Theater in der Josefstadt and later at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
In the 1980s he managed to bring the musical “Cats” to Vienna. It was performed more than 2,000 times and attracted over 2.3 million visitors. His directorship at the Vienna State Opera was marked by major productions such as “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Elisabeth”..
An experienced all-rounder
However, his diverse talents were not limited to the stage. Weck also made his film debut in the 1950s and gained great popularity as a music show host. He also showed his skills as a director and producer of various television films and series.
The passionate hunter and wine lover is known not only for his artistic achievements, but also for his commitment: he was named gourmet of the year in 1993 and was actively involved in the German Life Bridge association. In his free time he enjoys nature and doesn't miss the chance to try delicious wines.
Weck also brought great joy in his personal life: in 1967 he married Ingrid Muttone, with whom he had two children. After her death in 2012, the actor continues to live in Vienna and enjoys life in his hometown.
The city of Vienna can be proud to have such an important personality like Peter Weck. His extraordinary life's work will not only be appreciated by many, but will also serve as an inspiration for future generations in art and culture.
