Salzburg Airport: Strategies for the future and new connections!
Find out how Salzburg's airport is facing competitive pressure and planning strategic changes to attract passengers.

Salzburg Airport: Strategies for the future and new connections!
In Austria, regional airports are currently under increased pressure. High location costs, fierce competition for airlines and seasonal traffic fluctuations are putting pressure on operators. How airliners.de reports, some airports are doing well while others are struggling to survive. In particular, strategic positioning and connections to larger hubs are crucial for smaller airports to be able to compete in international traffic.
Salzburg Airport in particular, which is second only to Vienna in importance in Austria, plays a central role. The facility's managing director, Bettina Ganghofer, proudly reports on over 30 direct connections. Even if Salzburg suffers emotionally from the lack of connections to Vienna, the airport remains an essential gateway for winter tourists from Great Britain, Scandinavia and Germany.
Challenges and opportunities
With up to 100 flight movements on 15 charter Saturdays, the airport can handle up to 20,000 passengers in a single day. The catchment area includes four to five million people, including many from neighboring federal states and parts of Bavaria. Thanks to its close connection to the international flight network, the airport manages to reach many travelers, especially in the summer months.
The interesting thing about Salzburg is its geographical location between the large hubs in Vienna and Munich, which serve as flank security. During the pandemic, Austrian Airlines unfortunately had to discontinue services to Vienna, which was an emotional setback for the region. Nevertheless, Ganghofer pursues a strategy focused on added value in order to offer a variety of direct connections and avoid transfers. Current connections include important hubs such as Frankfurt, Istanbul and London. The managing director would also like to have connections to other destinations, especially in Spain, Italy, France and the east coast of the USA.
Strategies to strengthen regional airports
At the expert forum “Aviation 2025”, which took place at Linz Airport, the role of regional airports for the Austrian economy was discussed. Over 80 representatives from politics, business, aviation and tourism took part. How tips.at reports, stresses the urgent need for common strategies between these sectors to keep the aviation industry strong and competitive. The President of Aviation Industry Austria, Julian Jäger, pointed out that the industry generates more than 25 billion euros in added value and creates over 240,000 jobs directly or indirectly.
The introduction of the flight tax through the 2011 Budget Accompanying Act is a further obstacle for regional airports. After bmf.gv.at The tax is subject to all passenger departures from Austrian airports and is therefore relevant for both Salzburg and other airports.
In order to promote competitiveness, Salzburg Airport is planning massive investments in a new terminal landscape designed to accommodate two million passengers. This measure will cost around 105 million euros and is scheduled to be implemented by 2033. The remediation of contaminated sites is a major challenge, which primarily includes the removal of chemical substances from firefighting foam. Nevertheless, Ganghofer sees the employees as the airport's greatest asset and relies on their commitment to attract future passengers.
Overall, it remains to be seen how the situation at regional airports will develop in the coming years. However, it is clear that a strong partnership between politics, business and tourism is required to strengthen this important component of Austria's infrastructure.
