Advent in Vienna: Experience festive boat trips and the magic of lights!
Advent has returned to Vienna and with it a varied program full of festive experiences. Under the motto “With Wien Holding through Advent 2025”, visitors can expect an exciting mix of cultural highlights and culinary delights. This year, Wien Holding has put together a varied offer, ranging from festive boat trips to art tours to magical worlds of lights.
The DDSG Blue Danube cruises are particularly popular. On board the “Christmas Dream Ship” on December 12th and 18th, guests will experience evening cruises with a delicious buffet and live music. The “Winter Wonder Wave” trips on December 13th, where Caroline Kreutzberger and Andy Lee Lang will provide musical accompaniment, are also very popular. On December 20th, the event “Elvis Forever – Rockin’ on the River” brings hits from the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll directly to the Danube. New Year's Eve gala trips are also offered, during which the Pummerin is broadcast live and fireworks are a fitting farewell to the year.
A feast for the senses
Another highlight in the run-up to Christmas is the anniversary tour of the KunstHausWien on the 97th birthday of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This takes place on December 15th and only costs 5 euros plus entry. Visitors can also look forward to the magical world of lights “Illumina” in Laxenburg Castle, which invites you to a circular route with water displays and laser shows every day from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. A shuttle bus from Vienna is offered here, which runs Friday to Sunday.
The offer also includes the sale of Christmas trees at the Vienna wholesale market. From December 1st, conifers from Styria and Burgenland will be for sale there - a nice way to festively decorate your own home. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Christmas markets in Vienna
The pre-Christmas period in the city is inextricably linked to the numerous Christmas markets. At the forefront is the Schönbrunn Christmas market, which is a crowd puller from November 6th to January 6th. There are 95 huts waiting to be visited here, as well as an ice skating rink and the Lindt “Golden Christmas” adventure world. The Christmas market on Rathausplatz, open from November 14th to December 26th, also offers a picturesque backdrop with a huge Ferris wheel and an ice rink.
There is also the option of driving from Vienna to Bratislava to the Advent markets. The Twin City Liner is offering a New Year's Eve trip with a festive buffet on December 31st to properly welcome the New Year!
Wien Ticket also has an Advent campaign in which numerous events offer discounts until December 26th. The United Theaters in Vienna are showing, among others, “Maria Theresia” in the Ronacher and “The Phantom of the Opera” in the Raimund Theater. Families get their money's worth with a special family ticket for "I'm Vincent! and I'm not afraid" for just 99 euros.
