VHS Hietzing shines after a successful general renovation and CO2 award!

The Hietzing Adult Education Center (VHS) can look forward to a remarkable success: it was awarded the CO2 Countdown Award 2024. The award in the “CO2 saved” category recognizes the comprehensive general renovation of the educational institution, which was completed less than two years ago. The modernization work at Hofwiesengasse 48 was aimed not only at aesthetic improvements, but also at a significant increase in energy efficiency and the use of sustainable technologies, as the Wiener Bezirksblatt reports.

The renovation measures included a gentle freshening of the facade, windows, roof as well as floor, wall and ceiling surfaces and the entire building technology. Particularly noteworthy is the new heating system, which replaced the old gas heating system with a modern heat pump. This not only significantly reduces CO2 emissions, but also reduces energy costs. The sustainable measures also include the installation of modern LED lights and extensive insulation on the facade and top ceiling. A green roof over the entrance and a photovoltaic system with an output of 30.3 kWp on the roof of the second floor round off the innovations.

Public sector and climate goals

The renovation of the VHS Hietzing is more than just a structural measure; it is a step towards the climate goals that the city of Vienna and the federal government have set themselves. On June 25, 2025, an event took place at the VHS to take a look behind the scenes of the “general renovation”. The director of VHS 13 and 14, Mag.a Sylvia Kuba, as well as other experts such as Ing. Reinhard Jahoda and DI (FH) Georg Stadlhofer provided information about the contribution of the public sector to achieving these climate goals. The event not only offered a valuable networking event, but also exciting insights into sustainable practices in facility management, as described by the FMA.

According to the Central Real Estate Committee (ZIA), the building sector is a key factor in climate adaptation strategies. The goal is to bring CO2 emissions to climate neutrality by 2045. By 2020, a reduction of over 40% in CO2 emissions had already been achieved, thanks to many energy-saving renovations and the replacement of old heating systems. The VHS Hietzing serves as a prime example that such measures can become reality, as Facility Management highlights.

In summary: The VHS Hietzing is not only a place for learning, but also a pioneer in terms of climate-friendly building practices. With a clear focus on sustainability and CO2 savings, the adult education center is setting out to create a green future for future generations. This is linked to the aim of inspiring other buildings in Vienna and beyond to take the necessary steps to achieve their climate goals. Anyone who would like to find out more about the sustainable measures at VHS Hietzing is cordially invited to stop by the next event.
