St. Josef Hospital Vienna: 95 years of giving life and healing!
Celebrate on October 19, 2025 St. Josef Hospital Vienna proudly celebrating its 95th anniversary. Founded in October 1930 by the Salvatorian Sisters, the house looks back on an eventful history that began in a small regional hospital. In its early years, the hospital specialized in surgery and internal medicine until it developed further and has now become one of the largest maternity hospitals in Austria, with an impressive 3,893 births in 2020.
The hospital was originally located in the former “Rosenthal Sanatorium”, which had previously made a name for itself as a mental institution. The departments for gynecology and obstetrics were opened as early as 1935, followed by an extension that continues to focus on modern, family-friendly care to this day. Particularly noteworthy is the commitment to natural births and the integration of programs such as “YoungMum”, which provides free support to pregnant teenagers. “Perinatal palliative care” for families with seriously ill newborns is also a crucial part of the hospital’s holistic approach.
Health priorities
Another important aspect of St. Josef Hospital is its strong center of excellence for cancer. The breast health center has existed since 2008, followed by an intestinal health center in 2013. The relocation of the center for esophageal and gastric surgery from the Herz-Jesu Hospital in 2015 also represented another milestone in development. Today the hospital includes various medical specialties that are indispensable for the health and well-being of patients.
Statistics of the social ministerial health statistics show a comprehensive overview of the health status of the population in Austria. This data is important for making health policy decisions and further improving healthcare delivery.
Forward into the future
Despite the challenges and changes the hospital has experienced over the years, the original mission of the Salvatorian Sisters remains unchanged: “Our concern is for the salvation of the whole person.” The St. Josef Hospital has established itself as an important part of the Vinzenz Kliniken Vienna and will continue to do its best to serve the residents of Vienna's 13th district in the future.
The ceremonial opening in 1930 with Federal President Wilhelm Miklas and the consecration by Bishop Ernst Karl Jakob Seydl symbolize the values that are still anchored in the heart of the hospital today. With a solid foundation and committed staff, St. Josef Hospital is optimistic about the future and will continue to be a safe haven for patients and families.
