Accident in Vienna-Floridsdorf: cyclist collides with bus!

A traffic accident in Vienna-Floridsdorf on Monday afternoon caused excitement and minor injuries to two people involved. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Dr.-Nekowitsch-Straße when a 25-year-old cyclist collided with a bus. According to Kurier, the cyclist tried to avoid a pedestrian and steered left onto the grass verge. He slipped on the grass and fell onto the road.

Unfortunately, the cyclist's left foot was struck by the right rear wheel of the bus. He only suffered minor injuries. There was also a minor accident on the bus: a ten-year-old passenger fell and also sustained minor injuries. The Vienna police have started investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.

Another serious incident last year

This near-tragedy also sheds light on a similar incident that occurred back on September 27, 2024. At that time, there was a collision between a 69-year-old pedestrian from the USA and a 62-year-old cyclist on the Vienna Opera Ring, near a bus stop. The pedestrian crossed the cycle path and was hit by the cyclist. [Vienna.at]. She received emergency medical care and was taken to hospital, while the cyclist refused to be treated by the emergency services.

The Road Safety Report 2024 from the Road Safety Board (KFV) shows that road safety in Austria offers both progress and challenges. A total of 351 traffic deaths were recorded in 2024, the second lowest number since records began. But the number of seriously injured people has reached a record level of 7,774, which is cause for concern. Cyclists and senior citizens are particularly affected here and are increasingly becoming injured. KFV emphasizes that distraction and priority violations are common causes of accidents.

The challenge of traffic safety

With the steady increase in the number of seriously injured cyclists - there were 2,828 in the last survey - it is clear that there is an urgent need for action. It's no secret that negligent road users often create dangerous situations. Road safety authorities particularly emphasize the importance of appropriate safety measures and behavioral changes to ensure the safety of all road users.

It remains important for the Viennese to always be vigilant and take responsibility in traffic. Let’s protect ourselves and others – this could prevent serious consequences in an emergency.
